I'm new to Mapsource but it seems pretty easy... in general. I've had no difficulty in creating waypoints, locating needed cities or other points of interest, etc. But in specifics I must be doing something very wrong.

When I try to create a route, all I get is a straight ling between waypoints. The route doesn't snap to any roads between them. While I'd enjoy some Enduro riding, I'm afraid the local governments might object to my 'as the crow flies' approach to cross country riding from one side of, say, Japan, to the other.

Even if I create a route along a major road, the route on the map shows only a direct, straight line from point to point rather than following the curving roads. I've followed the quick start guide, I've followed the Mapsource for Dummies I and II here, and I've tried a search for any clues as to what I'm doing wrong. And now I appeal to you; HELLLLLLLLPPPP!

Thanks

Stitchawl,

Have you tried going to EDIT, PREFERENCES, ROUTING and then checking that the ROUTE STYLE is highlighted as USE AUTO ROUTING and not USE DIRECT ROUTES.

If so highlight AUTO ROUTING, apply changes and try again.

Hope it helps.

P.S.

If this does the trick there is no need to re-do any routes you might have entered already.

Just highlight the route in your route list menu, right click on it and highlight RE CALCULATE ROUTE. It should then get it to snap to the roads.

If of course my first suggestion didn't work for you, forget this. :D

I have the correct boxes checked... I just un-checked and re-checked them to be sure. No joy

Tried this anyway. No luck. I tried making twp new routes, using just two waypoints and three waypoints, zooming all the way in so the points are right in the middle of the roadway. Still no joy. All I get are ruler-straight lines between the points, rather than following the roads.

I also tried this with another map. Still no joy. Both maps work very well without the routing function, showing me 'closest,' POI, tracks, etc.. just won't plan routes! Making me crazy!!!

Problem corrected by a re-instal of Mapsource. I should have thought of that first!

On the other hand, I now have a copy of Tyre installed as well as ITN Converter. I'll play around with all of them. I'm planning a three week tour around Japan's northern-most island, Hokkaido, for the summer, and this will be my first tour using a GPS. 35 years of touring all over the world, usually lost and enjoying it, and I've decided to try to be accurate. Go figure...

Excellent, glad you found the solution.

I used my GPS for the first time when touring for 2 weeks in The Pyrenees............I found it great for 'getting lost' and ignoring it totally if I saw something that looked interesting 'off route' but with the comforting feeling that it was always on my side working to get me to where I wanted to eventually be.

Enjoy the trip.

I have a feeling that I'll be using it a lot this Spring, before the Hokkaido trip. Finding restaurants and hotels in rural Japan is far more difficult than in most First World countries, especially for one who's skill in the written language is minimal. Having the 'Find Nearest' option will be a blessing for them, to say noting of finding gas stations in areas where the closest village might be 30K across a mountain. I don't like relying upon my 'reserve' fuel if I can avoid it.

This part of Japan (The Kansai Region) offers some beautiful bike rides for single day or two-day trips, and we ride as often as we can. The GPS should only make things easier!

I always start using Tyre and later upload it into Mapsource to add the details such as Hotels / Fuel Stations and other points of interest.

Tyre is much easier for creating the route zooming in and out, renaming waypoints etc.

The new Tyre Version 6 is now out, well worth the upgrade (you should be offered an update when you start Tyre, if not go to website www.tyre.tk and get it.

Not looked at all the new features, but it does look better and now has tabs so you can have multiple routes open at the same time.

Once finished in Tyre just open GPX file with Mapsource - only one thing you need to do and that is quickly zoom to each waypoint, I have found (the hard way) when moving GPX files between applications the waypoints can get calculated a few metres off and end up on side roads (or at worst on the wrong side of a motorway carriageway / alongside the motorway) creating interesting diversions, loops and cut throughs.

There is also a paid for Pro version coming out soon, I have signed up for it, although to be honest I already find it more than adequate, just thought it was worth supporting the guy

As I just downloaded Tyre the other day, the version I have is 6. I've been playing back and forth between Mapsource and Tyre but as yet, don't find either one more to my liking. I'm still getting my feet wet with both. I have loaded all the Youth Hostels as Waypoints, working between GoogleMap, The JYH web page, and Mapsource, and really am getting quite impressed with the possibilities. I'm just coming to understand the real power of the GPS, and wish I had been able to afford one with Bluetooth capabilities so I could pair it up with my helmet communicator. However, I did get pulled in by a 60% off sale on a discontinued Garmin Nuvi and really couldn't pass it up at that price.
