Truly very fond of my 07 but have never liked the alloy wheels so after looking around for a good condition pair of spokes with no luck I've ordered a new pair from BMW. I want to swap the pressure monitors over from my old wheels so have also ordered the appropriate kit to swap them over but my question is can I just take my wheels to a regular tyre fitter or should I go to the trouble of taking them to a Motorrad dealer?

Ive used both and its been alright. However my pal got his buggered at an independent fitter and had to go to a bit of hassle getting them sorted by the local BMW dealer who was paid by the garage that knacked them. Not out of pocket but deffo a bit of hassle.
As you have ordered new wheels and fitting kit from BMW why not ride in and ride out with your new wheels fitted and then pick your old alloys up in the car later?

Just make sure the tyre fitter knows they are there and you should be OK. BMW doesn't have a magic machine that stops them getting damaged they just know they are there.

I bought them from Cotswold BMW (great price) and I live in North Wales. I guess I'll go to my nearest Motorrad dealer, which I believe is Ellesmere Port (I've just moved here from the Highlands).

+1 i use this guy hes nearyou.http://www.bobsbiketyres.co.uk/

Ooh, I've just followed your link to Bob's tyres - they look pretty good and he's a bit closer than BMW and in truth.......I had dropped into the BMW dealer to say hi last weekend and to ask about these wheels and a new helmet for my wife but was rather unimpressed with the service. The chap I spoke too, with a bone through his nose etc. didn't seem to know anything about stock or prices.

Think I'll give Bob a call!

The monitors should just swap from wheel to wheel though a new O ring for the valve stem makes sense.

The bike ECU can be programmed to read two sets of pressure monitors. Have you considered buying another pair?

Good idea from Bendy, especially if your TPMS are running on their original batteries, it could be an idea to put new sensors in your new wheels, and leave the originals in your alloys for occasional use?.....

The sensors are sealed, and the batteries not officially replacable, but can be done by digging them out, soldering in new ones and re-sealing. Have a search, there is a thread / video somewhere of someone doing the same.

I asked about new batteries and was told that they don't normally need changing - begs the question as to how long they last? I have bought the BMW kit to relocate the sensors which I guess will be some sort of seals. DOn't want another set as I will probably sell the alloy wheels.

My GSA on alloys. Powder coated gloss black.

The OEM paint looked reasonable though just starting to fail. From experience with engine front covers, leaving the job isn't a good idea as the hidden corrosion can quickly eat into the metal.

Mine is an 08. The TPS monitors have become a bit intermittent over the last 12 months. They will get new batteries at the next tyre change. It's an easy enough job with solder tagged battery and electronics grade silicone sealer.

I had an 08 as well. One of the TPS failed in 2010 while still under warranty. Apart from the lack of technical knowledge of the dealer 'experts' it was eventually replaced.
The other sensor was still working fine until the bike and I departed company in Nov 15.
A great safety device indeed, if a little expensive.

Heres my 90th anni with the early model alloys i fitted after having them powdercoated. I removed the sensors no problem all i did was use a little rubber grease when i re fitted them to alloys......no problem with leaks.

My late model Alloys are exactly the same weight as the wires. They cope better with winter salt but otherwise its a fashion thing.

Cool :thumb

I plan to fit mine with road treads and keep the wires for the more knobbly tyres. Its a fashion thing but roads well greased with salt and knobby tyres don't get along too well. A set of discs on both front wheels makes swapping-over a breeze.

It hadn't occured to me that people would change from wire wheels to alloy wheels!! It must be an age thing!

The wires corrode where the stainless spokes react with the alloy rim and hubs. Properly finished alloys don't corrode so its a no brainer to fit alloys in winter.

Do you have to remove the front wheel bearings to get them powder coated ? I want to get mine done. Also, where's best for new tps sensors? I want a pair for the alloys.
