New wheels for 07 - who should fit tyres with pressure monitors?

Ooh, I've just followed your link to Bob's tyres - they look pretty good and he's a bit closer than BMW and in truth.......I had dropped into the BMW dealer to say hi last weekend and to ask about these wheels and a new helmet for my wife but was rather unimpressed with the service. The chap I spoke too, with a bone through his nose etc. didn't seem to know anything about stock or prices.

Think I'll give Bob a call!

I

If you are talking about Chester Motorrad they are rubbsih in my personal experience. I have been a few times and was not impressed on any occassion.

I use Williams in Manchester when I need work done and bought a Triple Black from them last year. Always great service from the parts crew when you need stuff, nothing is any trouble for them. If you phone an order they'll even post it out to you for a couple of quid when the parts are available. Free hot and cold drinks, as many biscuits as you can eat and a pleasant environment.

Avoid Chester, the straw that broke the camels back for me was they couldnt even be bothered to return my call when I wanted to spend money on accessories. Not good business acumen!

Do you have to remove the front wheel bearings to get them powder coated ? I want to get mine done. Also, where's best for new tps sensors? I want a pair for the alloys.

For powder coating you need to fully strip the wheels to the bare casting. Make sure the bores where the bearings fit is protected with blast tape so the metal isn't roughed up. It should also be protected from powder coat. Clean off any tape adhesive before fitting bearings. I smeared high temperature grease over the remaining edge of bare metal after fitting bearings and seals.

Many enamellers will shot blast to remove normal paints. The OEM paint is much too hard so has to be chemical stripped. Mine were coated by CJ Ward in Burton on Trent at £25 per wheel. Stripping by Thyssen Krupp cost £14 per wheel (they did the whole car bodies shown on the VW van/car resto TV series).

For TPS monitors these might help Two for £80 seems ok, but you'll need to add the cost of valve stems to those in this list.
BMW or a GS-911 can program two sets to one bike.

Thanks but the £80 ones are for water cooled as are most on ebay. Anyone know how much from BMW ? if the paint is that hard they might paint better than powder coat then as mine have no corrosion or chips in them.

This is the type for the Hexheads. K25 model is listed

The paint is indeed VERY hard. Get it flatted off with a shot blaster before painting. But if there are ANY signs of bubbling you might as well pay to have them dipped. Additional coating/painting costs on bare metal wont add up to much.

I painted mine in gloss black as the bike was low mileage and the wheels had no chips etc , I didn't need to remove the bearings and the finish was excellent.

If the paint is good there is no need to strip it away so no need to remove bearings. The issue is that ANY chips in the paint WILL allow corrosion underneath so check carefully before painting. The easy way to flat the paint for refinishing is to have it grit blasted. No need for an aggressive hammering just dull the shine.

sorry but i was asking how HE did HIS wheels as they look good.

Hi Andy ,

I had them done by local bodyshop , as the wheels were in excellent order I would guess they gave them a light sanding and painted them ... The finish was excellent and I was happy :-)

I had mine powder coated.

BUT

If there are any corrosion pits the curing oven heat can cause the finish to bubble. If the metal is 100% clean, both methods will work fine. If the metal is corroded and pitted it must be fully cleaned out and filled. The filler won't take powder coat so the job must be painted.

I believe powder is the better option but there are swings and roundabouts.

So, back to my original subject........I thought about it for ages and decided to take the wheels (new ones at huge cost) to the main dealer thinking that if they got damaged they would be in the best position to give me a new one....... So, booked in for this morning at BMW Chester, took my old alloy wheels, a new pair of tyres and a new pair of spoked wheels. The work I booked was to have old tyres taken off old wheels so type pressure sensors can be fitted to new wheels and new tyres fitted to new wheels. I was keeping old tyres so no disposal fee which means remove two tyres and fit two new tyres and balance. Cost? £150 to me! Too much says my darling wife, how about £110 says dealer, how about £80 says my good lady....we ended up paying £70. Is it me?

The sensors are as easy to change as any "bolt on" tyre valve. Time-wise almost zero costs. Tyre changes always cost more at a dealer but £35 each is still steep

I got my wire wheels tyres removed only on one side and left the tyres on then I removed the sensors took two minutes for the pair. New tyres fitted for nothing as part of the deal when I bought them. Also price included balancing.

So now I've fitted my new spoked wheels I think I'll offer the alloy wheels for sale. Is there likely to be any interest in them? Fabulous condition, no marks on the rims, just a couple of bits where the discs fit.

...... talking about Chester Motorrad they are rubbsih in my personal experience.

I agree.

Using Chester Motorrad is just God's way of telling you that you have far too much money to spend.....

When I got a recent quote from them to fit a new set of tyres I had to rush to the bathroom to check if somebody had written "Mug" on my forehead in Magic Marker without my knowing.....

I will continue to use SMD tyres in Leigh - http://www.motorcycle-tyres.co.uk/ - who provide excellent service and very competitive prices. No tea though.
