Hi there,

Been lurking and researching recently. I'm looking at replacements for my faithful 7 yr old Transalp - its done 54k pretty trouble free miles. I could buy another but after 7 yrs I need a change.

So I came across the newish 800gs and it looks/sounds great. The one thing that puts me off is checking the valve clearances every 6k. Its a very involved job compared to the 1200. I use my bike every day for commuting so it would be a 6 monthly job.

Then I started researching the 1200. I wasn't thinking about this bike to begin with as the 1150 was so big and I just dismissed it. However, the 1200 is not much heavier than the 800 and its actually got a shorter wheel base, and narrower width!

The thing that concerns me is the oil consumption on the 1200 - it seems very hit and miss.

So bearing in mind my use (99% commuting, part m ways/part central London), and the maintenance for DIY, what would you go for? I also love the boxer engine generally.

I guess I'm looking at spending no more than £5500 to £6k. Therefore a 2 yr old 800 with 5k miles (saving around £3k which seems like a bargain) or a 6 yr old 1200 with 15 to 20k miles.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers

ps also any thoughts on reliability? The TA has been fantastic. I recently sold a Ducati Monster that I owned as second bike for two years - it was a great bike but that was when it worked! It needed lots of tlc. I will probably have to sell the TA to fund the gs, so it needs to be reliable!

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Much appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I've checked out the 650. But buying a 2 year old 800 with 5k on the clock you can save £3k so whats the point?!!

I guess my head is telling me you're right, the 800 makes sense - my heart wants the big 1200. If I'm honest the 1200 is way more bike than I need, but I do like it........

If your heart is saying 1200 go and ride one back to back with the 800. I just think that between them the 800 is the better bike. Unless I was two up touring with luggage, which I amnt....

Just go for the bike you want. If you buy a 800gs and you want a 1200gs your never gonna be happy with it.

They will both do what you want so just go with the one that puts the biggest smile on your face!:)

I went for the 650gs, year on and I still smile everytime I get off!

You're right, I need to ride both. Any thoughts on how maintenance/running costs would compare?

The F800 will do the best part of 60mpg and the R1200 about 45mpg.

Cheers, good to know. I am thinking the 1200 will be more difficult to maintain on a diy basis?

as earlier stated by fellow gser dont want to offend but I had a 2007 r1200gs and loved every minute of it, im now on a 2010 GSA and its even better, I was given an 800 whilst mine was serviced and it was like going back in time and i could wait to give it back. If you were used to nothing else or come off a 125 then maybe but if you like big (easy) bike riding give the 800 a wide berth!:thumb
