Newbie Test Ride

Just went for a test ride on a standard 1150 after years of slating my bro for riding one. Fook me, they hustle. The torque is fantastic and so easy to ride compared with my sportsbike. Definately the way to go.

The only problem that worries me is seat height. With the standard GS on its lower setting I can get my feet flat on the floor, so I'm quite happy.

I actually want an adventure. Now they had one in the shop with a standard seat and I was on tip toes on both feet.........this didn't feel good, especially as I *have* to stop it on a slight camber to get it in and out of my garage. Does anybody have a similar experience with the adventure re. the effect of the lower seat? Will I get the balls of my feet on the floor with the lower seat???

Try a search from the button at the top of the page.......there are many many threads about adv heights, lowering them, how to deal with it etc etc......you'll have enough material to keep you reqading for days

My bruv had exactly same problem with standard GSA, however he found one fitted with standard GS ohlins and a lowered seat. Still can't quite flatfoot it but very close. He now feels more confident and even more so when its loaded. Not a cheap option though.

After riding my ADV my mate fell in love (with the bike ) but found the height of the saddle kept him on his toes. He solved it by wearing Gary Glitter platforms (in black) he looks a proper twat but he's more than happy with the bike

I'm 5'10 and can get my feet flat on the deck with the damper in the low position and the springs on the low setting. I recommend this at first, it would have saved me picking the fekker up half a dozen times
Having done 7k miles or so this year im now more than used to the beast, and have wound up the damper settings etc. You will also learn to avoid parking up in dodgy situations, i.e. front or rear wheel higher then the other and tip toe reverse manoeuvres off driveways

Didn't realise that the preload made such a difference. I suppose as the ADV has a big of extra travel, you can afford to reduce the preload and have a bit extra sag.

I pursuaded the dealer to get one of the low seats out of stock and I'm going round tonight try one out. Hopefully I'll get the balls of my feet on the ground. If so, I'll probably buy it

Fekkin bikes............they cost me a fortune. AND I'll have to buy a present for the wife to 'compensate'........double whammy. Still, hope to save money on running. I spent £700 on tyres for my CBR in 1yr / 12k miles, so I'm hoping to reduce that!!

Bit hacked off at the moment. Am interested in a bike at South London Motorcyles, but they won't take my 1yr old CBR in px.

So now I'm facing having to sell privately, which is a hassle I could do without. I hope that BMW ownership will be better from this point on.

There are loads of very clean GSs out there, don't hurry to buy it if it's not want ,you really want, wait and get the one you want, it's out there somewhere.

Don't be like me and rush into it!!!.

Brought an 1150, then swopped it back 3 weeks later for my old 1100.

Take your time.

Well, I had some good news. I went for a ride on the adventure with the low seat and had no problems. I think there could be some slight hiccups if i were to stop on a bad camber, but I could get the balls of both feet down at once.

I'm going to check out some more dealers at the weekend. My brother has recommended SPC down in Hampshire, so I'm going to check out the stock.

I'm after a clean Adventure, aluminium, hot grips, engine bars ABS, '04, less than 10k miles. Want to pay around £8.5k and get a good trade in for the CBR.

Gizza shout when you've got the bike cbrfan. Just down the road from you (PW).

Got my GS1150 from Skip, lives near you, a couple of months ago and love it to bits. Never got so used to a different bike as quickly as this one.

I was also worried about the height, being a short arse, but its got a low seat so no real probs. Like they say, here's a good place to look for one. Got mine from this forum and it's immaculate.

And another true-ism; it's already emptying my wallet due to the new goodies I'm putting on...
