Can anyone who's been to the NEC so far tell me what's the word on some of the recurring issues that seem to be rolling around this forum?
In no particular order these would be:

1. Are there any new colour options coming in the new year, or were any displayed?
(Ive already seen PL1's reply about the model year starting in September but just wondering).
2. When will the non-ABS roll-out begin?
3. Any definative news of a ADV. model?(There again Ive read the threads and the 'word' is for an average time of late '06)

If there were any other tasty morsels cast from the top table that I haven't covered in the above then i'm sure were all keen to hear.

I am asking because i'm not sure if im going to be able to make it this year.

Since this is my first substantive thread on this forum I may as well add two other comments , having watched this site for many months before joining and then trawling through the back catalogue so to speak.

Firstly, on the issue of 1150 and 1200 , i'll keep this short.

I did a fairly short back to back , the 1200 first followed by the 1150adv.

IMHO
1150 Pro's: Better instrument panel , more charisma , the GS 'concept' as I always thought and hoped it would be - I get it completely.
1150 Con's: Offensively heavy , seat not the best.

1200 Pro's: For me, more generous dimensions for knee bend and h/bar positioning - comfortable seat. Narrower for filtering. Perhaps smoother and more torque ,most noticable in top gear roll on. It's a step forward and more FUN.
1200 Con's: Instruments, why major dividers at 20,40,60,80mph etc.? We need 30 and 70 most in the UK don't we? The flattened plane of the control cluster seems a bad idea too. Im temped to say a bit plasticy or brittle feeling but you can't have it both ways (see above) and ide rather have to replace plastics than metal after a spill(£££)

My wishy washy conclusion: They are both great bikes and if I woke up tommorrow and found either outside with an envelope containing the Log Book in my name ide be chuffed, and perhaps most importantly , wouldn't give a second thought to it's reative merits or failings against the old school/ new school alternative while I rode it.

Secondly , on the issue of the forum itself.

I cannot speak for anyone else but I think that many currently silent members would contribute their thoughts , wisdom and insight if it wasn't for a number of aggresive and frankly childish contributors that want to highjack the discussion .

Ive often noted that a potentially interesting thread degenerates into either a slanging match, a number of bitter, sarcastic asides or both.
Im not looking for a PC, New Labour, touchy feely experience but I DO feel that it undermines what were all here for. I'm sure the usual suspects, and perhaps some less usual, will now pillory me for my comments but at least im trying.

Have a good and peaceful Sunday,
g

It seems to me that it's gone a little quiet out there?:D :D

Seriously though do you not think that this is pretty much the nature of a fair proportion of the beasts? i.e. motorcyclists.

As a secure, sensitive, empathetic and self aware sort of man I find myself somewhat marginalised at times around a lot of our more macho brethren.

There are times that I feel the need to stand up for myself but in the main I don't let the opinions of others bother me too much.

Number one is a love of motorcycling that's very much a part of me whether I like it or not (I do!).

But it does take all sorts and the 'noisier' members shouldn't prevent contribution so long as others are robust enough to not care too much;)

I agree with the above opinions. It seems clear that when people start making pee taking replies to threads they should think a bit more about who they are replying to. Members with lots of posts seem to be able to accept this type of procedure (including myself) but I like to think that when I try and take the pee out of someone it's done with memebers whose posts I've read a lot and believe that they are up for it...

As for hijacking threads, sometimes it works out OK and sometimes its completly out of order.

Agreed.....

If someone hijacks a thread in one of the technical forums or outside of the beak'n'bollox, I'll split it off to the relevant places if I see it.....

In the pub though, unless the thread starter raises an objection, I'll usually let the conversation take its natural course, or deal with it if it turns into a rant or slanging match.

If a thread is innapropriately hijacked outside the pub area, please feel free to PM me and I'll look at it straightaway.

Been to NEC & Dealer Meeting

Hi Mister G,

I can confirm that there are no changes to the R1200GS or R1150GS Adventure in terms of colours available.

What may be good news for you and others considering which model to buy, is that from January 2005, R1200GS production will revert to "normal" ordering patterns, by which I mean the Integral ABS will return to the option list at £795.00. Hand Guards and Pannier Fastenings will remain standard GB specifications.

The other excellent news is that the feared price increase of 5%, has been kept down to approx 2%. All optional equipment has increased slightly, Heated Grips £175 to £195 as an example, plus there is a new option of Clear Indicator Lenses again from January build.

More details from your local dealer.

HOW MUCH

Hi PL1

I just wish to confirm heated grips are £195? Im kind of more used to buying aftermarket Spada grips for £35 and retro fitting them. I hope I can fit them to a r1200gs?

Yep, will set you back one hundred and ninety five smackers and worth every penny, just take a look at them and the way the switch sits nicely on the right hand cluster.

Clear Indicator lenses.....

.....already available from your local friendly European dealer:

Cheapskate............

Just order the BMW ones.............they are the best, fully integrated and suitable for the bikes..............

The Spada ones......may turn out to be nasty and cheap!!!!!!!!!!!

Good news!

Thanks for the information PL1, and to everyone else for their input - most helpful.Great news about the 2% price rise - that's a couple hundred £saving in real terms over the rumoured increase and not out of line with other goods.

As far as the latter part of my inaugural contribution,i'm sure ive ruffled a few feathers with my comments but I leave it to the rest of you to decide if I was close to the mark or not

;)

regards,
g

cheapskate ehh?

Sorry Jonny. Spada heated grips have been really great for every bike ive ridden, and at £35 a go, thats a very big differential from £195. This is what worries me about the BMW and choosing one of their machines; you seem to pay well and truely through the nose for everything...

Ever since I went over to BMW's in 1997 and now I'm on my 4th GS and it's an 1150............

The cost of ownership compared to Jap bikes/Triumph has never been lower (and my first 1100GS was £9975 OTR in 1997 - so a 1200 is cheap in today's world).

Residuals are better, servicing (in the north anyway) is cheaper and less frequent........

Just do the sums..............GS are cheap to own and run.

With other bikes............losing money.................'you might as well watch the water going down the plug hole'
