The cheapest place nearish to me that I found for tyres does NOT romove nor replace the wheels!
I did it and left the bike precariously on the centre stand with a adjustable axle stand under the Final Drive and a small purpose bought scissor Jack under the front of the crash guard..
The Metzler Tourance Next still worked out at £238 and I did all the graft !!!

Next time I will just pay the extra and let the bike shop do all the work.

Incidentally the tyres for the Honda 1300 I had were bigger and were £240
I find tyres in the size the GS takes are expensive!

Place near my charges £20 per wheel for a ride in - ride out tyre change or £5 to fit balance a loose wheel. So i always do what you did, and just run them down in the car.

If you take the rear wheel off first the CoG will stay well forward, which should mean you do not need anything under the final drive...one less bit of faffing (though not a significant time saver admittedly).

My local fitter fits for free, ride in ride out.... shop around... he's no more expensive.

He does charge £20 for my Harley as they are a pig to get out.... but TBH that's fair enough in my book!!

I braced the bike with added supports because on this fine mid summers day it was blowing a gale and raining hard on and off.
I had visions of getting back to find my bike collapsed on the floor.
Shes all back together now.
I decided to try out the new Metzler Tourance "next"
They look the part and feel pretty sticky to the touch.

I recently paid £135 for a pair of Bridgestone Battax A40's, fitted to my GS. That was with the recent discount offer. Normal price is £185

All done while I waited:

Note for next time:

40 miles south from you is SMD Tyres in Leigh and their current price to supply and fit a pair of Tourances to a GS is £220 including fitting (ride-in / ride - out) balancing, VAT etc.

Excellent service and they will look after your rims.

I find it safer to pop the front spindle back into the forks and put an axle stand under that

Lord Snooty and Mr Chapman thats very good advice..
I like the idea of replacing the axle and supporting with an axle stand.. I hadnt thought of that.

Both suggestions have been noted.. Thank you both.

Whilst Paul at SMD offers a great service, Shorrocks in Penwortham are nearer to you. They will usually offer to beat anyone around, will fit to loose wheels or ride in ride out although the charge differs. I am a blood biker and also get a discount from Michelin, I won't tell you what I paid for a pair of PR4's but it was substantially less than £200 on loose wheels.

Thank you haydw
As you say they are near enough for me to seriously consider.
In fact because I live not far from Glasson Dock the place I went to in South shore took about 45 mins to get to so I dare say not much more time to go to where you suggested..

I have it noted..

Thank you

What's all this about taking wheels off and propping up the bike and transporting wheels to somewhare to get tyers fitted? Why not ride the bike over and then take off the wheels one at a time? JJH

That advice is far far too sensible .

(also saved me having to type out the very same reply).

I was told they would not accept that as their insurance would not allow non employees to do any maintenance work. The site isn't suitable for doing the job in the street.

I get charged £15 per (loose) wheel, fitted and balanced with old tyre disposal. He does the rear on a car wheel dynamic balancer. Front is static balanced.
