Nitrogen tyre inflation

I have just had my local ATS dealer purge my tyres of Oxygen & replace this with purified Nitrogen...haven't got a clue if the claims over better fuel consumption, slower pressure loss & no moisture etc are correct, but as it didn't cost me a single penny i believe them all !!

I'm absolutely convinced that the fuel consumption has improved by 0.006mls per gallon, the ride have improved immeasurably & knowing that i don't have plain old oxygen in there any more with water molecules flying around will mean i will sleep soundly tonight...quite what happens when i need to top up ..we'll leave that for another day...don't you just love the words "for free" though

You never did - you had air which is c . 78% nitrogen.

Is a tank of Nitrogen cheaper than a tank of Oxygen?
It's certainly safer.
Is there perhaps less of a chance of an increase in a premises' insurance costs if they are using cylinders of an inert gas rather than one that will go up like Leslie Ash's lips with a misdirected fag?

PS yes, I know, they don't actually use cylinders of Oxygen, its just a compressed air tank, but wtf, I enjoyed it

I've heard the nitrogen molecules are bigger than nitrogen / oxygen etc etc ones, so you should get lower pressure losses through the tyre.

No difference in pressure loss using a pressure gauge to check on the above though

Best check with your Insurers that this extensive modification hasn't invalidated your cover or necessitates a hefty additional premium. Or that it hasn't invalidated your warranty.

Where i get my tyres fitted, he uses to fill all tyres. Only thing i've noticed over the many tyre changes is that the tyres have never needed an extra top up with loosing any pressure.

Same as snake oil, nothing more nothing less. Get them to fit a PC cooling fan in the air intake as well, bound to get another 50bhp from the forced induction.

So if its "Old Guff" why do I pressure test refrigeration circuits on industrial chillers with "White Spot" Oxygen-Free Nitrogen ??

Several reasons:

Firstly it's inert.

Secondly, it's very dry, down to molecular level, which means it has a small coefficient of expansion when heated. Moisture is the enemy in refrigeration systems, otherwise we could just pressure test using air from a compressor.

Thirdly, it's non-toxic although it doesn't support life when inhaled in concentration.

Exactly the same reasons why its both safe to use, and good in tyres when compared to compressed air.

The whole idea of nitrogen is that it's moisture free and so the pressures are more stable. Valuable in a race car or bike but virtually un noticeable on a road biased situation. You would get a bigger difference from going to the loo before you set out. Besides unless it's done properly and purged right there will probably be just as much moisture in there as normal air.

Maby because you have to. If ordinary compressed air would do you would use it. There is no advantage in using nitrogen in your Tyers. JJH

What magic tool did he use to purge the tyre of air then? You have to pull a complete vacume before refilling with nitrogen, because a tyre has only one way in, and one way out for air/other stuff to get in there.

There would be a few fridge companies interested in that technology I bet
