Nitron shocks

Interesting theory? What's the option to compressing it?, can we leave it a little loose- serious question as I'm on the, albeit shorter, Dover Calais on the 24th?.
I don't recall if they strap it down or leave it to you to do??
I'm on the Rosslare Cherbourg route this June

Me and Betty Swollocks discussed this theory yesterday.

It will be strapped down but this time I'll ensure that it isn't compressed Right down, secure but not so far as to be pointlessly putting pressure on the shocks.

I'll explain to the lads on the boat why, however if it's choppy then there won't be any choice tbh.

Theory could be bollox but you never know

Can't recall the mileages of the two I read about, it was the sudden nature of the failure that would scare me off buying.
Across 4or5 forums I frequent, Nitron is a name that just seems to pop up a little too often. And I'm not sure I'd accept them needing a refurb every 12k:eek:

By chance the Nitron thread has reemerged on the vfr site, after I'd last read it there's been 2 or 3 more incidents of Nitron shocks popping seals at pretty low mileages and usually just out of warranty:blast
I'll be shopping elsewhere if and when I'm in need.

How many units sold haven't popped their seals?

You only ever hear of the bad stories mate.

They are great shocks and need servicing.

I'll be sticking with them

Compressing shocks on the ferry - are they compressed any more than when Mr Tosser and his large wife, complete with all their luggage - sit on the bike?

That's very true mate, but I don't recall hearing similar stories about Maxton, WP, Ohlins or just about any other brand. Certainly not to this quantity. It's a bit like Avon tyres, just a few too many occurancies of faulty units. Too high a chance of getting a problem for my liking. And as there's plenty of alternatives out there:nenau:nenau

as with most oil seals a continued latteral load in one direction will eventually cause a problem, this is why there are bearings/bushes usually fitted very close to a seal to stop this, say if your fork slider bushes are slightly worn and you leave your bike on the side stand for a prolonged period it may push unevenly on the seal causing for want of a better description a flat spot or deformation, this of course will not happen all the time to all types of seals, it could be just a faulty seal or just worn out or gone hard or whatever, but it does happen and usually this is the cause of the problem when stood over long periods of unnecessary/uneven latteral loading.

So shock has now been rebuilt and is on the way back to me.

Full rebuild was £95 plus postage.

No issues other than the fact the shock had lost its gas, as I suspected.

I know that some feel that a nitron or any shock loosing it's gas after 2 years and 12k shouldn't happen but that's what you get when you have a performance shock.

OEM may last longer but I can honestly say as a past user of the 1150 OEM shock that the difference between them is massive.

Used OEM shocks are akin to old rattly legs.

Nitron is akin to brand new 18 year old legs if you get my drift.

Stability covering and the drive out 1 up, 2 up and or fully loaded with kit etc etc they are just excellent.

I will continue to have them serviced and continue to have impeccable handling 👍😎🍺

I can understand a sports shock needing regular services under extreme track use, but over a hundred quid every 12 k miles on let's face it normal use solo/ pillion and or luggage seems crazy to me.
Good job Mickey hasn't got one on his 120 k miles 800 ! :blast

You should at least see 25 k miles from a shock that is supposedly designed for the bike and that bikes intended usage ( extreme off road excluded ) by the manufacturer .

It's the NTR Sport + with HPA so does that now make it a sport shock? 👀
