Hi folks.

Have 15 plate 1200gs, out riding and I stopped in a hurry to help someone and cut the engine with the side stand. After a minute realised I had left the ignition on and switched it off, after returning to the bike 5 minutes later the bike shows no signs of life. After an hour manage to start it with the help of a passing driver and jump leads, however every time the earth was removed the engine would die, I assume insufficient voltage. If the I kept the revs up it would run and managed to get home, though speedo was out and rev counter did not work and charging indicated 17-18v (eek).

Back home I charged the battery and no life on the bike.

Any idea whats wrong? Will replace the battery but can help thinking its got bigger issues.

Cheers

there is a seperate reg rectifier on nearside of bike, better hope its not the alternator cause thats a major pia, change batt and test again is my take on it

This sounds weird.
I think I would start to focus on the connection between the battery and ground..

My concern is that I probably shouldn't have jump started it from another vehicle. Will change the battery and keep fingers crossed!

But you can jump it and it will run?

is the battery 5 years old? If so, most likely it has developed an internal short circuit or low resistance. The car battery was able to supply enough current to overcome the leakage of electrons and your alternator was overloaded until you revved the bike, thereby increasing the power output to overcome the leakage.
