No more need to buy an SPIII now...

The quest is incredibly small... In the latest Stuff Magazine there's a full page ad for the Quest, in natural size - if anyone is considering buying the Quest, do have a browse through some magazines to see how big (small!) it is. If you agree to the size of it, then I guess it's a very good GPS!

243 of memory is nice tho!

Is it water/rain proof?

I can't find any mention of this. If not then not much use on a bike. :)

And it might be small which is a problem with the gloves. But the screen is the same size as a GPS60 or about the same size as the old classic the GPSV.

Oh and it has voice prompted navigation, for those of you who like that kind of thing.

GPS Warehouse

Nearly bought a Quest from GPS Warehouse today, but unfortunately I will have to leave it until next week - so there was still one in stock when I left for £500. Didnt get any hands on though. The demo unit is inert and the salesman couldnt free it from its display cradle. It is very small though, size of an old Palm Pilot I would say.

Spoke to Steve from Ram-mounts who says that the Ram cradle is still in the design stage and is probably 2- 2.5 months from shipping. Which is a shame as there isnt much point for us to have one without a bike mount. Putting it into the tank bag is a bit of a waste I feel. He did point out the various options of arms and U-joints, as well as showing me pictures of our very own Mig-Sels cradle, which could well be an option.

Cheers,

Mike

PS. Was umm-ing and ahh-ing about buying a GPS on the way there (its too expensive, just a toy etc). But then I got lost and it took another hour to find the place. A typical day out for me so it probably is a lot more practical than I thought.

I have seen, held and tried it yesterday, it is a cool little GPS unit! It is very light and thin, fits into a shirt pocket easily.

The display is rather small but it is high resolution so you can see more detailed info on it than on a GPS V. The buttons are quite small too, so glove control might be a bit of an issue.

It comes with the Garmin car cradle, and if I wanted to buy one (I don't, as I have a 2610) I would mount it on the bike with that for sure. With some creativity you can mount a RAM ball on the back of the car cradle and you're all set. It might not be the ideal and most secure mount, but it can keep you going until RAM or Garmin comes up with the real thing. The unit slides into the mount from the top and it won't pop out for sure.

So I wouldn't let the bike mount problem stop me if I wanted one. It comes with 256Mb, so you can fit quite a bit of maps on it. And the supplied car cable has a built in speaker. If you cut off the plug and speaker end, you can use it for hard wiring it to the battery and connect helmet speakers or earphones to the sound wires. I did that with my 2610 too, no problemo.

The antenna clicks into 3 postions quite securely, so I don't think that will be a problem either.

The built in rechargeable battery is a nice feature too. You can use it for hiking or or city tripping all day if it's fully charged. And it has a 10.000 points tracklog with TracBack feature.

I think this is gonna be a hit!

Cheers,
Michel

Just had a quick walk down Tottenham Court Road. ASK electronics are putting it out for £430 (in store promo price). In stock now.

The car cradle looks like it could be modified to fix onto a RAM mount, but it might not sustain the conversion back. Will have to think about it a bit more.

Regards,

Mike

Finally took the plunge and bought one from ASK on Tottenham Court Road.

It's sat on my desk now charging up, and I will have a play in the car this evening.

It came with a second (desktop) cradle which is actually a car cradle with the arm missing. This could make the modification to a RAM mount a bit easier to swallow as the car mount can be left untouched.

No new impressions yet, apart from the screen, which although bright and clear, is very small... will see how I get on tonight, as I am quite short sighted, and my lenses shrink images somewhat.

Cheers,

Mike

Mike,

Please post your impressions (in a new thread?) when you have something to report. :)

Cheers! :beerjug:
