Hi, i have a BMW Navigator II sat nav, but no software!:(

What are my options, apart from swinging at it with a hammer.:rocketwho

Where did you get it from?

Options;
Get the discs & unlock codes from previous seller/dealer
Get your money back
Speak directly to Garmin, & appeal to their better nature

Hi chasr, it came with the bike. The seller doesnt know what has happened to the software.

You could buy it.......or obtain it illegally :augie

One 'inbetween' measure you could try is to see if anyone who has an older version of their software (who's upgraded it to a later version) will give it to you and let you have the unlock codes.

Probably still technically dodgy, but at least it's been paid for somewhere along the line.

There are also lots of free overlays and mapping out there........or some pretty good cheap alternatives (search for 'smellybiker' for example)

If he's lost the software, and if he was the first owner of the unit, it's possible it's never been registered. Give Garmin Tech a call - they are normally very helpful and should give you some options.

Worst case, you'll have to pay for the latest map update (not too expensive), but you will need Garmin to send you a copy of Mapsource.

As Fanum says, there are other ways so don't be disheartened.

Since you only need to transfer waypoint files from Mapsource to the unit, all you need is an original copy of mapsource, a map DVD and any unlock code which is for that particular mapset. If however, your Nav II doesn't have all of Europe installed (on a card), then you won't have any way of transferring maps unless you buy an upgrade.

Talk to Garmin.

Cheers, Chasr.

I though it would be fairly straight forward.:(
The seller before me never used it to my knowledge.
I will give Garmin a call, i will have to be prepared to be baffled.

Fozzie, I had the same problem a couple of years ago when I bought a used Nav2 off ebay without software.

I spoke to Garmin customer support twice. The first guy was a prick who didn't want to know, and told me they don't support online auction items. The second guy was called mark timms and was a gent. He agreed it isn't their ususal policy to support online auction kit. He then re-registered my unit in my name and sent me copies of City Navigator Europe by post, and my unlock code via email.

You could phone Garmin as I did and get their help.

The problem you will then have is that you can't install the map data from CD as you need to initiate the install using a BMW Nav2 installer CD. If you need one of these, give me a PM and I can burn you a copy of the BM installer CD for the Nav 2 software.

Don't go buying new Garmin mapping from ebay without first checking it has the unlock certificate. Better still, try to get them free from Garmin customer support.

Another question regarding this,
on the back of the satnav is a hinged cradle thing. It looks like that the part is screwed in at the top with one screw and then it hinges, and then looks like you have to take out a pin (like the pin for a watch strap).
It appears that this part is used for when you mount it in a vehicle.

So am i right in thinking that i remove the screw, remove the pin, take it off and then i am able to mount it on the hard wired section that is on the bike.

Hope it makes sense!
No pics, computer has packed up sorry.

That won't work as the unlock code is matched to the specific device, another persons unlock code will unlock the maps on your PC but uploading them to the GPS will result in an invalid unlock code message.

If you can obtain/borrow the same mapping as installed on the unit, I'm assuming that as it's a BMW Navigator II (a 2610 at heart) that it'll be the non NT version of the mapping that you require, not sure if it needs to be the specific BMW version or if the plain 'vanilla' non NT will do the trick. The latter will probably be easier to get hold of. Ensure that it's the same version, check the 'map detail' part of the menus on your GPS, that should tell you.

Now, you need to install this on your PC. Once you do this you should be prompted with the unlock wizard. You need to leave the radio button as 'Yes, I have a 25 character unlock code', on clicking the next button you have the option to type it in or get it from the plugged in GPS. Obviously, you'll need a USB lead and the mains adaptor. You wont need the latter if you have a laptop and can do this on the bike though the BMW cradle might make this a problem. Not sure if the previous owner gave you the mains adaptor :nenau

Once you've unlocked the maps you can view the unlock code and save it to a file for back-up purposes by using the Utilities menu in Mapsource; Utilities > Unlock Maps > Next and then check 'view my installed unlock codes' or 'back-up my unlock codes to a file' accordingly.
