no sound on my computer?

What were you doing before it happened?

Did it happen after a reboot or in the middle of something?

Have you installed, removed or added any software or hardware to your system recently?? (there are some odd conflicts, for example with some virus software packages screwing sound from certain soundcards)

Obviously you've checked the plugs and power to the speakers (you have, haven't you ;) ) but have you plugged the speakers into another audio source to make sure they're still working???

Has one of the kids accidentally pulled out a cable then stuck it back in the wrong socket??

Check the sound properties in system control panel to make sure they haven't been disabled or turned down by something you've done.....

Failing all that (and probably some other simple stuff i've missed), we'll need to get more technical and system specific ;)

speakers

I have checked they are still plugged in at the back of the computer as sometimes the dog likes to lay under the desk and when he removes himself he takes some of the cables with him! there is power to the speakers if i turn them to the max i can hear the background hiss. i did download kazaa and use it to download a track ( damn you oscar peterson trio) and although i could listen to the track after i downloaded it it would appear to be the start of my problem? I am just running a spyware check at mo after reading jamies post script and currently its found 4 (and i am running upto date McAfee)

Long shot this but worth checking - if you have XP and automatic updates turned on you may have downloaded a new sound driver that doesnt work (common for VIA chipsets) - open Windows Update and check the Installation History to see if windows installed any changes around the time you lost sound.

Cheers,

Spookey

Had a PC with Via Chipset that did just that a couple of days ago.

Fix - just insert the Driver CD that come with the Mother Board / PC and click to install Audio Drivers again.

Sound

No Fanum my computer is still mute!
I have found that by wiggling the audio lead in the socket in the back of computer i get intermittent sound, so I guess it is either the socket or lead both only 5 months old so should be covered under warranty still its a pain in the ass. Thanks for all the suggestions and help Guys, Appreciated:beerjug:
