No Spark

A friend of mine jet washed his 1150GS without the tank on. Now got a sparkly clean bike but now my bike, sorry, his bike, will not start. It started OK after the wash and left it to idle for a few minutes and then all of a sudden it stopped. There is power to the bike, fuel pump makes a noise and it turns over OK.

Bike has been left for 2 days to dry out and electrical connectors disconnected and electrical contact cleaner used. Electrics have also been sprayed over with WD40 but there is still no spark at the plugs. The plug leads have been disconnected, contact cleaned and sprayed over with WD40.

Is this pointing to a hall sensor issue?

Check the hall effect sensor connection. It's at the front right. I'm not sure where exactly, but you can find it by tracing the wire that comes out from the front of the engine.

I wouldn't advise using WD40 on electrics - it's conductive. Contact cleaner will work. Lets hope you haven't fried something.

Remove spark plugs, put the bike in a high gear, turn ignition on then rotate back wheel and turn engine over by hand .... You should hear the fuel pump priming on and off as the wheel rotates. If fuel pump doesn't prime then it's almost certainly the hall sensor. But if the fuel pump does prime that doesn't mean the hall sensor still hasn't failed If you know what I mean.

The original ones were wired with the wrong temperature rated cable. Thank Bosch for that - they make them for BMW.
The heat from the engine block behind the sensor plate eventually crystallizes the insulation of the individual conductors and they short to one another. The problem is aggravated by moisture.
All HES assemblies will eventually fail, usually at the most inopportune time.

New updated sensor assemblies are wired with the correct temperature rated cable.

An alternative is to rewire the existing Sensor Plate with Aircraft grade Teflon High Temperature wire.
I offer that service on this side of the pond since 2005 and have rewired many.
