Hi I have an 1150gs, 98k, 01 reg, never let me down before today.
this morning nice and dry got to petrol station filled up, bike restarted and stopped then restarted and stopped again then wouldnt start at all.
No, diesel not added to tank my first thought as well.
The symptoms, when ignition on fuel pump priming and cutting off but then cutting in and out frequently. Tried to start it several times with no joy, while waiting for recovery man I turned the ignition back on and before I touched anything else fuel in the exhaust ignited with a woof like a big dog and a 2ft flame out of the silencer at this i turned it off. When I tried it again the fuel pump is now behaving as it normally does but the bike wont start. I have checked and have no spark. have any of you guys got ideas of what might be the problem, any help would be apreciated. Thanks

similar thing happened to my 02 1150 few years ago, ended up been the hall sensor,do a search on that item.:thumb2

Is it me or does every answer to every question nowadays begin with "Hall Sensor"

Yes it may be the sensor but help the guy rule out the simple (cheaper) stuff first - unless of course you make a living selling the fecking things.

IF (and its a big IF) there is no spark at all - suggests a problem with the low voltage side of the ignition curcuit. Wires as they enter the base of the ignition switch are a weak spot - have a search around the forum.

Given the fuel pump issues and the no spark, it does sound very much like a hall sensor problem but as waterloo700 says rule out other stuff as well.

As he says, with the ignition on, give the wires that enter the base of the ignition switch a good wiggle - if the fuel pump cuts in and out or you get other spurious electrical issues, you've found the problem.

To test the hall sensor, take a spark plug out and earth it, pop the electrical plugs off the fuel injectors, take the black plastic front cover off, turn the ignition on and turn the engine over using a spanner on the crankshaft pulley (make sure you turn it in the correct direction). You should hear the fuel pump prime every engine revolution and see a spark every revolution.

Just my 2p - others may know different / better :thumb

Oh - forgot to add - welcome to the forum Artman.

Don't worry - they are not as grumpy as me. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the answers and the welcome, off to the garage now will let you know later how it go's.

If the Rev counter is also going ape shit mental on turnover it'll point to Hall Sensor.

Done the wiggling and carried out the tests with the crankshaft and no sparks or pump re-priming only thing missing is the rev counter acting up. Geuess it looks like a new Hall Sensor.

Does anyone know if the crankshaft pulley bolt is a lefthand thread?

Thanks for your help.

Nope standard thread

Another hint IF you suspect it is hall sensor don;t handle the feckin plugs with the ignition on! Tuned in of here's GS electrocuted me for about 15 seconds and the other day a friends bike had stopped but no sign of hall sensor fault

So muggins is checkin for spark and decided to change the plug for a new one and as I lifted the plug from it's earth point the fecker started sparking all on it's own!!!

Just ignition and kill switch on No starter button touched or anything else

Lets just say we weren't awfully bloody impressed sitting on the ground against the toolbox with sticky up hair :D

Search realoem for future questions like these. It's an M something, so it's a metric screw so the thread is normal ;)

Dan.
