Sounds like the cam chain tensioner to me.

Does the rattle go a couple of seconds after it has started?

Depending on the year of your bike it will almost certainly be the cam chain tensioner, you need to buy a new type which is a vast improvement on the old and quite a common problem.

They are fairly easy to fit:thumb

Γεία σου πατρίδα :)

Sorry people, that was hello in Greek

Για σου και σε σενα φιλτατε.

Yes the noise is getting louder a couple of seconds after it has started.
It's 2002 model.
My mechanic sed to me that the new tensioners have severous problems and they don't prefare it.Have you ever heard something about that?

+1 for above.. put the new type in job done ( thats just do it. in english )lol

Hi,use the SEARCH facility on here and try to find the PART NUMBERS for the new type of TENSIONER.BMW parts people may just supply you with the original part listed on their microfiche. The new and old parts look different.
Good luck.

Is this fix really neccessary or is it purely to get rid of the sound?
I mean, what's likely to happen if one just ignores it, does not replace the tensioner with the new type?
Will it cause any problems in the future (chain breaking etc.. ?) or will it just stay noisy?
