Hello

My R100gs developed a noise (clik, clik,….) that increases frequency with the increase of engine revs.

I thought that was a valve that as not correctly adjusted but I readjust them last evening and the noise is still there. (0.10 inlet; 0.20 exhaust)

The engine doesn’t star well. Seems like just one cylinder is working but after the engine is hot every thing seems ok. Except the noise.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

When you start up....quickly ( very !) touch the downpipe to see if they are warming up equally..if so then all is firing :) - if not, change spark plug, plug cap , HT lead in that order.
Quite difficult to pin a noise down via a website:(. Have the actual rockers been/need shimming?

Then we can explore more....:bounce1

I'd think it was a spark jumping across somewher, take tank off [ making sure carbs are full,] wait till it goes dark then start the bitch up...
10 / 1 you'll see the click as a short :thumb2

I already bought a new set of sparkplugs (but they still didn’t arrive) and I was planning to change the cables. (they are different from right to left) .

Where can I find the new cables? I can’t find them in the ebay …

one more information:

I've just remove the sparkplugs and the old ones were very dark. I’ve put the new ones but since it's raining cats and dogs I didn’t went to try the bike.

:nenau

Is this a good idea?

Used coil and leads

Hi

The BMW sets with the metal caps are prone to internal shorts which could well be the problem you are having. I would buy a different new set of leads and plug caps. I bought mine from Motorworks in 2004 (part number ELA43183) . They dont seem to do those any more but ELA43182 would fit.

Have you tried running the bike in the dark with the tank off yet? That should make finding any arcing pretty easy.

From the fact that your first reaction was to adjust the valve clearance I take it the noise more or less resembles too much valve clearance. But since you have checked and adjusted this, it would indicate too much axial clearance on one or more rocker arms. This doesn't stop when the engine heats up, it actually gets worse because the oil heats up and becomes thinner. The rocker arm axial float for the R100GS should be 0.03 - 0.07 mm.
Mine has been ticking for the last 30.000 km and I have been told that it shouldn't do any harm, but I am getting fed with it now so I'll get some work done on that shortly as well.

It shouldn't have any relation with bad starting though. That may be an ignition problem.

So….

New:
-spark plugs
(didn’t find the leads yet)

Result = much better cold star

But I still have the noise…
I also did the night test and I didn’t saw any spark in the wrong place.

I will buy the new leads and them, if the noise is still there, I’ll check the axial clearance in the rocker arms. Can this be adjusted?

One question: Can I buy some all-purpose leads or should I buy the correct ones? Does the length of the leads have any influence?

Thanks

Axial clearance can be adjusted with shims.

and/or by clamping the rocker supports up when tightening the head bolts.

even when i shimmed mine correctly, i found the rotation of the head bolts would alter the gap, so G clamped them in place :)

i bet it doesn't fix the OP's noise though :augie

Copper wire leads and NGK 5K caps work fine .
I put a dab of solder on the terminals at the coil too , like the OEM ones have, and I reused the sleeves from the OEM wires too

Better starting with new plugs can be a sign that your coil is on the way out- they don't get called crackomatics for nothing.

Hello

Some more developments

Now after some driving kilometres the idle revs became higher and irregular

I’ve cheeked the throttle cables and everything is free.

Comments….

When I’ll have some time I will dismantle the carbs and will adjust them. (advises?)

Note:

-The days are hotter now in Portugal and the engine seems to work also hotter
-I’m using 95 octanes instead of 98 octane fuel

New spark leads

…. Still the some noise...

PS: I toke the spark plugs out (almost new- 200kms) and I notice that one of them had a black mark in the ceramic while the other was almost clean…

Hello

I have this problem that I still didn’t manage to solve.

What I did:

I changed the spark cables
I changed the spark plugs
I adjust (several times) the valves
I adjust the rocker shafts

And the noise is still there…

Any more suggestions?

How many miles (or Kkm's) has the bike done and when was the camchain last changed?

change the coils
check the carbs for an air leak between the carb and the cylinder head
check the vacuum takeoff screw on each carb - is it there?
check that the choke on each carb isn't sticking

"How many miles (or Kkm's) has the bike done and when was the camchain last changed? "

I have no idea!

I bought the bike 5000 kms ago. (it’s a 130 000 kms bike)

Could it be from the chain? The noise comes from the right cylinder and I can’t notice a similar noise coming from the left cylinder…

“change the coils”

I already test is there was any spark leaving from the coil

“check the carbs for an air leak between the carb and the cylinder head”

It’s a very metallic noise

“check the vacuum takeoff screw on each carb - is it there?”

?? Where is it?

“check that the choke on each carb isn't sticking”

Already checked (and the next step is to clean the carbs)
