Just in case anyone's suffering the same issue!
Bike in question: 2009 R1200GS.
Thought I'd just post my experience with a set of Metzeler EXP tyres.
I fitted a new pair a couple of thousand miles ago when it was time to replace the original rubber that came with the bike.
Over the following months I started to hear a "cyclical-whining-wheel bearing" type noise when riding in the 40mph to 50mph speed range. The noise gradually became worse over a few months, being loud enough to distract you whilst riding with ear plugs in. it was bloody annoying and after a replacement rear wheel bearing didn't solve the problem I was up for selling the bike!
I replaced both tyres, (for Michelin Pilot 4's) problem solved!
The Metzelers are good tyres, they are very popular and I ridden on them before with no issues - weird eh!
