Hi there all you techno heads. I am a newbie to this site so please try and bear with me ! I have a 2001 R1150GS with 30 thousand on the clock. Last saturday I was brave and rode to London. after about 20 minutes riding in the heat the righthand head started clattering. The oil pressure light ( oil can ) flashed up but the oil temp bar remained at its usual setting. When reved the oil pressure light went out. However the rattling did not go away. IT sounded like really noisy tappets. I parked up and left the bike for about 6 hours. Upon returning I started the bike and rode home with no problems. I am using a good quality 20/50 oil as supplied by my local dealer. Any ideas ? Cam chain piston breaking down ?

i wouldnt worry tbh i get it on mine in hot weather. you will find also when its roasting that the gear changes will start trying to work against you (not clean shifts) and the bike will suffer in the heat. its the oils heating up and thining slightly thats makeing the clatter.... (does sound like a valves dropping)

nothing to worry about just get out there and ride :thumb2

AIRHEADS DON'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM WHATS A CAM CHAIN? :pullface

Sorry southerngs try oilhead forum, maybe they will help:nenau

My engine becomes noisier when it gets hot, I found that it was better using 20w50 than the 10w40 I was using previously, other than that it appears to be a characteristic. Jam some earplugs in and ride on :thumb2

As Stewart says mine also gets a bit noisier when hot (although I've never seen the oil pressure light). I use semi synth car type 20/50 (Rock Oil).

I'd imagine the noise you heard will be the camchain tensioner struggling as the oil thins - could be worth taking it out and having a look (easy on the right hand side). Having said this, I've not heard of problems with the right hand tensioners (the old pattern left hand ones used to cause problems but I'm not sure what year the 1150 received the new version).

If all you'd experienced was increased noise I'd be inclined to take the usual 'earplugs and ignore' advice but as you've seen a low oil pressure warning I'd be inclined to get your oil pressure checked out (might just be a switch problem).

A camchain is one of these on an airhead ;) :

It's normal, mines noisy when very hot, hard to ignore, especially if you've just got the bike and come from a jap machine!

Just makee sure you run on 20/50 MINERAL. The oil light flashing is probably a weak sender.

Roll on winter! these boxer's do'nt like the very hot weather, but perform faultlessly in cooler weather!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I really appreciate your replies.

It could be the right side throttle body pulley. The bearings go and the thing rattles. The rattle will sound as though it's coming from within the cylinder head. Hold the pulley thing at the back of the TB to see if it goes away.
