What will happen if someone fits a set of wheels without ABS rings to an ABS equipped bike ?

The reason for asking is a friend of mine has bought some wheels which have no ABS rings and he plans to only use them for off road use fitted with TKC80's. He doesn't need ABS in the dirt anyway but will the ABS controller go bezerk when it finds there is no ABS rings fitted ? I assume he can always just turn off the ABS system but in case he forgets will strange things happen if the ABS isn't switched off and he hits the brakes ?

Without the ABS rings there won`t be any pulsed count input to the ABS controller,so I can`t imagine 'strange things' happening.....the ABS unit would be unable to compare front and rear wheel RPM,so should be inoperative.

The ABS fault lamps are certain to be in a dizzy fit though.....so either remove fuse/lamps or cover with a bit of tape.

I seem to remember someone with a 1200 saying that having no ABS ring fitted to the front wheel didn't cause problems. Can't remember who it was though, sorry. I personally put an ABS ring on my "off road" wheel, even though you turn it off when off road, I can imagine a situation where you'd be glad of ABS on tarmac with knobbly tyres fitted.

No problems at all with my old 2000 1150 ABS bike. Just put some tape over the flashing lights!
Everything works fine again with the ABS wheels back on :thumb
