Non-airhead dumb question

What is the fabric that one used to see wrapped around the exhaust on twin shock 2 stroke crossers ?
Reason I ask is that although the cat on my turbodiesel is ok, the braided flexy pipe that connects it to the turbo is blowing so I thought I could wrap this stuff to seal it
Any ideas

I'd have thought you would have been better off replacing the original pipe.

I replaced it Rob but just over 1 yr ago so no more warranty. The cat is ok as it just passed its MOT, it only blows when you first start it but looks like a rat car with smoke pissing from the wheelarch. Thanks for the link I'll have a look
