Non GS - Removing Polystyrene ceiling tiles

OK chaps heres a good one for you :beerjug:

I have scrapped off the old and unsightly polystyrene ceiling tiles from my kitchen and been left with the glue blobs that were holding them on.

The plaster board underneath is as new so i can't understand why they were fitted in the first place.

My question - is there anything on the market (apart from my aching arm and a scraper) to remove the glue without ruining the plaster underneath. The glue thats scraping off is a white powder so i think it's some kind of ceramic tile adhesive.

Please help or I will have a aching shoulder/arm by the weekend :bow :bow
 
Bite the bullet and get it plaster skimmed by a professional.
You were presumably expecting to do so anyway.
I have a house where every room had ceiling tiles. Tried all the options. It is the only way to get a decent finish.
In the long run it is the quickest albeit messiest solution. You will have to redecorate
 
there no way we tried everything at the old house to clear that up ended up putting up plasterboard to cover it and having it skimmed. Total nightmare...
 
If its tile adhesive that's been used (often is), a wall paper steam stripper will do it easy peasy.....(assuming the plaster boards were skimmed first though :augie )

I agree, i bought a flat a few years back the ceiling was covered in polystyrene tiles, i spent a day removing the glue spots from the hallway called in the artexe man and he covered the rest in a couple of days finished and very smart it was too:thumb

Interesting thread.
Every time I visit my elderly parents, I cant help thinking, WHY did my dad put up those tiles and I often wonder what would happen if there was a fire:eek:
My mum is in the early stages of dimentia and cant cope with every day life, so I darent suggest they get them removed.
I just hope there is never a fire.

Thanks guys, I knew I could rely on you for some contructive advice.

I have spent the day with a wallpaper steamer and the glue is now off. While I was at it the old wallpaper came off as well. Plaster is good and some Dulux coverall (read thick paint) will be applied tomorrow.
