Evening all,

A mate and I have spent the last couple of days slowly replacing the clutch and gearbox on my 85k, 1999, non-ABS, R1150GS.

A few problems were encountered, although nothing special (a few seized bolts, mainly) and all seemed to come apart well and go back together well. There were a few minor electrical gremlins, such as the rear brake light switch taking a while and a fiddle to get working, but they seem to be all solved. The gear indicator wasn't so we popped it back off and re-seated it and it runs through the gears quite happily.

Re-assembled everything, taking the opportunity to replace service items like plugs, air filter & fuel filter as well as all three throttle cables (and the fast idle) while things were apart.

All looks good, all appropriate lights come on when I turn the ignition key, the fuel pump can be heard to whine, the starter turns but the bike won't start. Looking at the plugs, which are sooty but dry, I don't think fuel is getting in there.

So we tried to check the spark by leaving the plug in the cylinder head and putting another into the plug cap and grounding it on the cylinder head. No spark was visible.

For the life of me we cannot think of a reason this should be so.

Any suggestions?

Sidestand switch?.
Did you reconnect the 2 fuel pipes the right way round?.
Check for any trapped wires.Did you touch the Hall sensors connector (up near the headstock) at all.

Apart from not starting, what would be the symptoms of this?

I have quick disconnects on my fuel hoses and they are reversed on each hose so that they cannot go back on the wrong way round

No :(

Did you put the fuel filter back correctly ? It has an arrow on it for flow direction.
Don't mean to sound patronising, as it is easy to get it wrong !!!!

Nothing patronising about that - I worried enough about that to have the tank back off and check things yesterday. It's in the right way round.

have you checked the fuzes?

Yup. All good. Currently wondering if there's a connector undone or slightly not done up correctly. I have no power / lighting in my garage & it's widdled it down all day here so today I have limited myself to putting new GL5 80W/90 in the gearbox and diff.

Tomorrow I drag the bike outside and go over all the connections I can find.
