Non Starting 1150

I've replaced the knackered starter motor on my 1150RT with a Nippon Denso starter...straightforward enough...but now the ******* refuses to start. The battery was left disconnected for four days whilst waiting for the replacement starter. The engine turns-over but is not firing...any ideas/clues gratefully received.

Few things to check...

Is there a spark?

Is there fuel?

Do you hear the fuel pump kick in?

Kill switch set?

Throttle cables seated in throttle bodies?

Alarm?

Try running jump leads from another battery or a starter booster type charger directly to the starter solenoid. If that works start re-checking all of your earth connections etc.

Do all the lights come up as normal?

Check engine stop switch on the handle bar might be turnd off!.

Been there done that. At 5 in the morning and late for work.

Tried all the usual things...fuses...plugs dry...no sparks...battery voltage is a bit low (even though it the starter turns over the engine) so I've bunged it on charge...

Can you hear the fuel pump in the tank wizz when you turn the ignition on?

Yes and No respectively...

shit battery will turn the starter and still not allow bike to fire, especially allowing for the new starter, that would be my bet.

Battery fully charged overnight...started first press

Apparently even if there is sufficient in the battery to turn over the engine it can rob the Motronic (poss moronic) unit of power...hence no sparks or fuel in evidence

Glad you got it running, perhaps a bump would have got it going? Any one tried bumping a 1150? I found it very difficult to bump start my R100RS.

I've not tried bumping my 1100 but I know that it'll lock the back wheel in second (tried an 'on the roll' bumpstart when it cut out once) so I'm not looking forward to trying

it's certainly one way of getting out of breath. I can bump start the r850 but the couple of times I've needed help with the 1150, I've asked someone for a push

Bump started my 1150 today. Twice up and down a big hill. 3 Hours.

Watch out for a seperate thread as my starter now makes just a clunk and little else. Once bumped bike ran 50 miles no problems. But same old clunk once I had got home.

Any hints and tips on checks on starter would be appreciated as I shall be pulling it all to bits Monday.

chunk and nothing else

the starter motor magnets can come off and get "stuck" - hence the chunk and intermittent success at starting the bike.

you need to re-glue the magnets (fiddly)

or buy a new one

or Motorworks sell re-conditioned ones and give you a discount if you send them your knackered one

Dead Chuffed

I received my Recon starter motor from Motorworks today. Would have had it yesterday but been chasing Parcel Force for 24 hours.

The recon is far better than I thought it would be. Just like new. All repainted, if its not new it certainly looks new.

Fitted it on. And first press of the button it started straight away.

I wish all the other bits that were liable to fail, FD, Clutch et al were as easy and well priced to replace.
