Sorry to trouble you all but my April 2009 gs with 7k miles is sounding a bit tappy when hot from the left side. Do they all sound like this when hot. It comes and goes between tickover and 3000 revs and then smooths out. I have resisted pestering my dealer since they are busy enough swapping out chains water pumps steering head bearings etc. See what you think. It seemed more noticeable today hence post.

My 09 has 11000 miles, clutch sounds horrid, buy ok as soon as you pull in the clutch. If yours sounds like that with the clutch pulled in, then it does not sound good.
Or it's the best sounding diesel motorcycle ever

pester `em!

Honestly, mate if you`re worried, Id pester the hell out of your dealer! You`ve
handed over large wads of dosh for your bike, and part of that is buying some peace of mind and aftercare for your purchase.I would get up there and nicely ask to listen to the engines of the same model they have there and see what you think.Dont get fobbed off with the old `oh they all sound like that routine.
Actually get them to prove to you that they do in fact, all sound like that` If you still think yours sounds like a road drill compared to the others, and assuming you`re still under warranty nicely inform them that you are not happy and will be leaving your bike with them to investigate further. If you start to get the feeling you are being given the old flannel,I`d suggest nice has had his shot, and its probably time for Mr Firm!Might be best to leave Mr Angry and Mr Menace ouside for emergencies only :angel
FWIW my 2010 F8gs also seems to have occasional bouts of excessive mechanical noise coming from it.Often after its got properly warmed up,but not always:confused: also sometimes get the` noisy out, quiet in` clutch syndrome too,but not always:confused::confused: Seems to purr at other times, especially when first fired up (tickover much smoother then too :confused::confused: ) I started to put some of it down to state of mind,I think everyone has had those spurious `Im sure I can hear those pistons scraping, big ends knocking, valves coming loose` moments:blast.
For me its usually on a long late night solo journey. However this is not a mechanically quiet machine, think we just got to live with that if we can,or wait until the new Triumph comes out,and chop it in!After hearing the hideous banging, rattling and knocking coming out of a beautiful mint condition Ducati a whle back, I stopped worrying got earplugs and invested in a Leo Vince carbon muffler and cut the dB killer in half.Sorted :thumb
Good luck,happy trails :beerjug:

Hmm,seems to be a lot of it about. I wonder if anybody has had the rattling/ticking noise actually cured? Or suffered any subsequent mechanical failure. No proof, but my instinct tells me it`s related to the extremely lean fuelling making the engine a little raggedy arsed at small throttle openings. When cold, the engine runs a far richer fuel mix.The actual noise seems consistant with some sort of cam chain rattle.
Just my take on it,please feel free to pour derision on my late night musings :blagblah:jager:D

Thanks all. Funny thing is day after recording engine was sweet. This morning it was a bit rattly but it is a cold crisp day. I have been thinking along same lines as Skon. Cold morning could mean lean. Hot engine could mean a bit rich. Either could cause a rough low speed running. Maybe the fueling is poorly compensated for temperature? Anyone from bmw her want to comment on how the fuel injection on this bike works? Maybe even air pressure could be the culprit. Just maybe the oil pressurised tensioner is designed for a lowish tension on the cam chain. I will not worry since the effect seems to be a design feature. I wonder if anyone with a power commander or "booster Cable" (which trick the temperature compensation") have similar observations/noises.

Bargain

Booster cable, aka accelerator module, does give a marked improvement to the response of the engine when in open loop mode(IMO).In closed loop mode (tickover,or a constant throttle opening) there doesnt seem to be much difference,as far as mechanical noise is concerned. As I understand it,the module fools the electronic brain into thinking it`s about 7`C colder than it really is,and the fuel/air mix is made richer to compensate.Improves pickup and acceleration (clue in the name:D) and also really helps smoothing out the slow speed snatch (fnar!) best 30 sovs Ive ever spent:thumb
