Been to Brittany once, it's ok. Honfleur is very nice for half a day and a good stop off on the way back to the ferry at Le Havre. Normandy and the beaches should be done at least once. Been to Provence 28 times and off down there again in April and June. Say no more !!.

+1 for normandybeaches.co.uk

Private covered parking as well, nice little restaurant 100 mtrs or so along the street.

Well Pinqu, you obviously know nothing whatsoever about Brittany. We've lived here for many years after having travelled all over Europe and can honestly say that there is nowhere better to live. Many of our b&b guests come back year after year and never cease to be amazed by the brilliant biking roads and stunning coastline.

I think he was being ironic :thumb

Wooosh.......

Max_W, have you thought about heading down to the Somme and Ypres if you're interested in military stuff? I did a great 4 day trip there over Easter, and, despite it being a bit sombre, loved it. I was checking out a few cemeteries and memorials of my regiment (HAC), and some of my Kiwi countrymen (even found a few with HAC and NZ soldiers buried side by side!).

Up to you of course, and I assume you've already done a bit of planning... but I hear Brittany isn't that great...

Hi there,

I'm planning a trip to France for later in the year, arriving in Cherbourg on a Friday evening and departing on a Tuesday evening. I've a reasonable idea of some of the key places to visit, but am hoping to trawl the collective experience here to get the best ones.

What do you think are the best places to visit in Normandy and Brittany for a mix of biking roads, culture, history and scenery? Any particularly good campsites? For those who know the area, are the rough daily distances shown on my map realistic?

All comments appreciated. Thanks.

All the Normandy Beach/Historical sites are worth a look but it's easy to pass time at these sites, I found Pointe Du Hoc particularly interesting also the remains of the Mulberry Harbour at Omaha beach, the pill boxes at Crisbecq and Longues Sur Mer some with big guns still almost intact are well worth a visit.
I stayed in Bayeaux a few years ago and thought the Tapestry also worth a visit, we used the audio guides at the tapestry which helped.......
Further along St Malo is a lovely place as is the Mont St Michel although both are probably best avoided at peak or holiday times if crowds and queuing are not your thing, they are both popular tourist destinations but it's possible to visit and enjoy both if you time it right.
The coastline North of Guincamp between Paimpol and Perros Guirec are impressive if that's your thing but some of the roads are very small and it can get busy you know when ;)
There is a nice route from Morlaix running South East which passes through the Parc Natural D' Amorique towards Guemene, the last time I drove it I remember thinking it would make a nice route on the bike, I can't help you with your Sunday route as I was a child the last time I spent any time there, that said I did visit the St Nazaire shipyard and U boat pens a few years ago and would recommend that as well worth a look but again it is easy to spend an entire day there.
Whatever you decide, enjoy and take lots of pics, I am well overdue another visit to this part of the world.

Many thanks to everyone for all the comments. Despite so many people saying it's crap over there, I think I'd better check it out for myself!

If there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that this won't be the only trip across the Channel this year. I really want to head north to Scotland too this year, but with 400 miles / 7 hours on a motorway just to get to Glasgow versus an hour to the relatively inexpensive ferry in Portsmouth or Poole, it's a bit of a no-brainer...
