Just in time for the end of the sunny weather I’m off to Normandy for the long weekend.

Got the bike all packed up nice and early and stuck my idiot reminder next to the starter button.

A dull 1hr 45m of motorway later I get to Portsmouth and once checked in I’m waved straight through to the front of the queue. Only 4 bikes and 1 cyclist on the ferry today.

Bike secured by the crew with a surprisingly clean looking seat protector and I’m off to bag a seat with a view for the next few hours.

Failed on mobile data so I didn’t get to do regular updates.

Friday:

A very smooth crossing to France, the ferry is slow and a bit dull but it was very easy going.

Passing HMS Queen Elizabeth on the way out of port.

Made it to the Ibis outside Bayeux for 11pm, totally shattered so was glad for a proper bed and not having to pitch a tent in the dark!

Nice. I am offf on my “running in” weekend in a coupe of weeks time. Just a Saturday night stay and Sunday back. Around 750km round trip.

Saturday

Today was meant to be dry so I figured was the best option for doing all the D Day sites that I wanted to see.

I picked out a route on MRA and modified it to arrive at my campsite for 4pm

First up was Sword beech, one of the British landing sites.

Next up was a quick stop at Arromanches-les-Bains and a view over the Mulberry harbour.

Then on to the battery at Longues-sur-Mer where the guns are still in position after they were silenced by a massive naval barrage.

From there it was on to the American Cemetery before lunch. This was something else, the scale of the site is vast and despite being the busiest spot of the day it was very serene.

More to follow…

Lunch was at a new restaurant just by the cemetery. Semi fast food set up but a very good burger.

Fuelled up it was on to Omaha beach.

Then my photo taking took a turn for the worse I’m afraid.

Pointe du Hoc was next, well worth a spot if you’re in the area as the ground still has all the scars of war. How the rangers scaled those cliffs under fire I do not know, very powerful and humbling place to be.

The second half of the loop was just roads taking me back to Bayeux, pretty French towns and rolling countryside. Very nice.

Camp pitched it was time to head into town for dinner.

It’s always tough finding good food in France

After dinner I want for a stroll through town and past Notre-Dame which had some beautiful music coming from it. Turns out York Minster choir were putting on a performance!

Having had my fill of culture it was a stroll back to camp to get some rest before a big loop planned for tomorrow.

Don’t know. You had more details waffle I think, what I’ll need to do is update my route maps and embed them (need to check Wapping’s guide for that).
You are being polite.

Do you use MRA?

Make your MRA route public, then follow these steps.

1. Go to MRA and select the route you wish to share. The tap on three dots.

Today was about a big loop of Normandy using a route I found on Ride magazines site:

(On mobile so proper embedding doesn’t work - will try and update this evening)

First stop was breakfast, the local boulangeries were closed (thanks France) so it was straight out to find breakfast.

Fortunately there was a boulangerie and tabac open in Isigny-sur-Mer so pastry and caffeine were obtained.

From there it was on out west, the weather was mixed and it wasn’t the most interesting riding (not helped by the occasional shower) but before long I was through the weather front and arrived at the coast and an endless sandy beach.

I wasn’t hugely hungry but knew I was pretty far from many options and there was a good restaurant nearby so I stopped for a quick bite and got convinced to try the local cider whilst I wasn’t hugely hungry at it, its excellent.

From there it was on south and as soon as I turned away from the coast the riding picked up, pretty French villages, lovely smooth roads, almost no traffic. Perfect.

I cracked on as I had a few hours riding left so didn’t stop for photos or to visit the massive abbey in the middle of nowhere (Tewksbury esc but more intact).

A road closure for them to resurface the planned road led to an interesting little single lane diversion though and I had to stop for that view.

The sky had cleared and it had warmed up nicely so I was definitely in my happy place! Arriving in Sourdeval I spotted a Moroccan restaurant that was open so decided it was a good time for a caffeine top up. The town was dead but there was a friendly drunk guy telling me how good the twisties were on the road I’d just been along, he was right but didn’t understand that was the way I’d just come and was heading off the opposite direction!

The last stint was an easy blast back to Bayeux, stopping for fuel on my way into town and then back to the campsite and freshen up before going on a hunt for food again.

Success, the small carafe of wine is a bonus when travelling alone and the view for dinner was great. I sat next to an English family who’d been over for a week so we had a little chat about local roads and places to visit. Bikers on holiday have to date always been super friendly!

After dinner it was back to the tent, a chat with my new neighbour who was on an R1300GS and had done a massive loop of France all the way down to Spain.

Thanks for the writ-up, appreciated.

Was this the restaurant in Bayeux in post #12, please?

Sure does look to be the place according to my investigation 🕵️‍♂️

Monday

No route plan for today, the aim was to have a gentle start and then go see some more sites and have an explore before the ferry. First up was breakfast and the local boulangerie was open today.

There’s a law in France that if it’s still warm when you by it you must eat it immediately. It was only a 10 minute walk but the coolant didn’t stand a chance.

Fortunately my old man taught me well and so when in a boulangerie always buy and extra item.

Anyway after a gentle morning and packing everything up in the sun it was time to move on. First stop was the commonwealth memorial, possibly a highlight the statues were incredibly poignant and the wildflowers made a beautiful scene.

Mulberry harbour in the background definitely added to the atmosphere

From there it was on to Juno beach and the memorial there

And then working my way through seaside towns to Pégasus bridge. The original is in the museum now but you can see it from the access road and they put a replica in its place for traffic to use.

I reckoned I had enough time to make it to Honfleur so I chucked that in Google Maps with avoid motorways and headed off east. The roads were better than expected despite a lot of towns with 30km/50km limits and I made it for 1pm. For the first time I was somewhere busy! There was traffic in town and SO MANY people! Quite the change to the last few days where only the American Cemetery had been busy.

5bf3667b28aa9a98ac76b91c44e6f1eb.jpg

Anyways it’s a pretty harbour but I was short of time so I grabbed a quick bite to eat and then jumped on the bike to head back, a group of UK plated Harley’s had blocked me in which was annoying but I wiggled by and rode down the pavement a touch to get back to the road.

I wanted to pick up some wine before the ferry so it was a fast blast down the toll road back to Caen harbour, they’ve removed the toll gates on the A13 so you have to remember to pay online within 72 hours if you don’t have a tag. Anyway €2.80 got me back in good time and I was able to fit 4 bottles into the tops on my panniers.

Joining the ferry and it was clearly a popular one. 20 odd bikes this time including a group that was 50/50 Ducati’s with racing clutches and adventure bikes - quite the mix!

The crossing wasn’t as smooth heading back but not bad at all and it meant the restaurant was quieter so I got a view with my fish and chips.

Docking in Portsmouth took almost an hour which was frustrating and the weather for the ride back was forecast as rain the whole way. Fortunately it wasn’t as wet as I’d expected and at least the roads are quite late at night so it wasn’t a smooth ride home, even if I did arrive just before midnight.

All in all a fantastic weekend escape, now I just need to plan my August one!
