Looking for a warm jacket to wear on trips when not on the bike, and i've seen a few of these north face jackets around.

As they are synthetic, are they any better or worse than traditional "down" fillings? and what are they like if they get wet?

It's been my experience that synthetic is not as good wet, compared to non-synth....

But it's all relative - these days the kit is so good, going with a main brand it's hard to go too far wrong.

I've had my Canada Goose for 5 years now - and really, it's too warm for UK climate. I save it for when I'm in proper sub zero temp.

Synthetic is better in the wet, primaloft for example retains 80% of its thermal properties when wet doesn't go flat, out of shape or smelly.

Down on the other hand does go out of shape, flat and smelly after getting wet a lot. There are new water resistant down jackets around but I prefer to stick to one r the other.

Probably the best lightweight, packable jacket for your needs is the Carinthia jacket that I think Touratech stock.

Thanks for the feed back!

I've been looking around for a while, and found this from North face this morning, was just trying to work out if it was a good deal:

The only thing that had put me off down was my lack of experience when wet, and also any special care that needs to be taken when washing?

I've got a small red thermoball jacket for sale - virtually brand new if it would fit?

I've got a North Face prim aloft jacket a bit like this (maybe older version). I don't think it is a warm jacket. I bought a down Rab vest (neutrino) maybe and that is toastie. I usually prefer synthetic for biking but the Rab wins hands down and packs to half the size.
