Just to say thanks very much for all the excellent advice I've had from here about Norton and AVG.
As advised I've now uninstalled Norton, via the Norton uninstal website, and installed AVG which is now happily running here.
Hip hip hooray, and the PC has definitely gained a chunk more speed.
One tinsey question please before I go.
When I boot the PC up now I get a message that says that "00007088.EXE This application has failed to start because NUMISC.DLL was not found".
I've been a googling and found that NUMISC is a left over from a Norton virus quarantine so hopefully is not doing any harm.
Hopefully.
But how can I get rid of the thing ?
Any help appreciated, thank you.

I also dumped Norton recently via the Symantec Removal tool, then ran CCleaner and was amazed at how much crap was left in the registry. All that shite now dumped as well, PC is squeaky clean and running much better :thumb

Good thinking, I'll run CCleaner and see what that unearths.

Alas no, ran CCleaner, rebooted but still get the message.
Never mind, bed time, we'll see what tomorrow brings.
Thanks for the idea though.

NUMISC.DLL....definitely a Norton remnant........

As previously suggested , do a search here or on Google for removing Norton....don't trust the Norton removal tool, it was them who wrote that shit in the first place, so they're not exactly going to get it right removing their own stuff ;)

You're not a great fan of Norton are you Fanum ?
Just a guess like.
But seriously, thanks for all your help.
I'll look into it all later, got to go to the shops now !!!

If all else fails and you have no other Norton software installed.

First try RUN and msconfig. Look under the startup tag and see if there is anything relating to Norton and disable it.

If that does not work.

Select Run and regedit, save the registry to be safe then do a search on "Norton" and delete every hit. Reboot and should be OK

Fink i would just do a REGEDIT and search for norton then symantic and edit delete what turns up....:augie

Dam, you beat me to it Andy......

Not in the slightest.........

On both :)

Norton :blast

If they had a good product they'd be world beaters, but their sales and marketing prowess far far exceeds the product integrity :(

This is poossibly getting a little technical now.
I've done run, msconfig and under startup there are a dozen or so things listed there including one of the Norton variety.
All on the list have a ticked box on the left.
Do I just leave the Norton one with a ticked box and click on disable ?
Feeling a little nervous about all this now though as we're into territories I do not understand at all.
Bring back the quill pen I say.

No....don't do that, all it does is disable stuff, not remove it.

Hold on five, I'll dig up the old thread.........

OK, Shuckraider nailed it earlier...the most common removal tool comes from Symantec, but there may be a few tiny remnants remaining,...try this first and see how it goes. :)

Full linky in case;

Alas no, didn't work.
First link didn't work but used second full linky which ran successfully, then rebooted PC but message still there on start up.
Thanks for all your efforts people but probably easiest if I live with it now as it just means a little extra click at start up.
I'll have a little googling exercise tomorrow though just in case I can find a solution.
Will report back if I get any success.
Thanks again.

There is nothing to be nervous about with msconfig. Very little on the list is essential. Some entries will run programs when the computer starts and others are there to put programs in the background so they start quicker if needed. With the speed of modern PCs the latter are not really needed, they just slow down the boot. Also, as you noted, msconfig only disables, it does not delete so if you find disabling something causes a problem, just run msconfig again and put it back. If you are unsure of anything on the list just Google the name and you will get a list of sites explaining what the item does and whether you really need it running.

The likelyhood is that msconfig will not totally get rid of Norton which is where regedit comes in. BE WARNED. It is ESSENTIAL to save the registry before deleting anything. As soon as you press delete on an item in regedit it is gone, there are no "Are You Sure" or "Save Changes/Cancel" options. If you make a mistake the only solution is to run regedit again and load the saved registry.

It's not a bad idea to save a copy of the registry BEFORE installing software, then if you don't want to keep it you can easily load the old registry back knowing that all traces of the software has gone.

Thanks Andy, I'll have a look into this tomorrow as it's now well past my bed time here in la belle France.
Thanks for your help, appreciated.
