I've been using the above for years and had loads of issues at different times.

As it is now coming up for renewal I want to look at alternatives that don't slow the machines too much.

I'm running a couple of PC's on Win 98, a couple of others on XP Pro and a laptop on XP Pro. As the PC's are for business I'm nervous about using AVG free.

Who has some recommendations that will give the same range and hopefully higher level of protection than the NIS suite?

Don't be, it's the best thing out there. We use it at work (bought) and I use it at home (free). It doesn't slow things down, it stops the crap. What more do you want? Do a search on here for it and you'll see plenty of other recommendations for it. :thumb

Just ditch the Norton!

I had massive problems with norton - computer guy reckoned these would do the job better and without any running problems - been using them for 6 months and all seems fine (all free as well!!):thumb2

zone alarm
AVG (free edition)
skybot
adaware

Someone with far better knowledge will be along soon....

Another one for AVG

I think most of the Forum use AVG free:thumb2
I've found nothing to beat it in 7 years.
I've just installed it on my sons new 'pooter, but getting rid of Nortons a fecking pain:spitfire :spitfire :spitfire
I'd recommend, to anyone buying a 'pooter, if you're given the option.
ASK FOR NORTON NOT TO BE INSTALLED, OR IF INSTALLED, DELETE IT UPON PURCHASE:spitfire :spitfire :spitfire :spitfire

As I am in the trade (I work for an AV company) I would be wrong to comment, especially as I am aware of many of the shortcomings of such products.

I would suggest that you could do a lot worse than consider the migration to Linux - Nearly any distribution will do and they always come with a good firewall, beyond that you need very little, maybe an On-Demand proactive AV scanner if paranoia really is kicking in.

NOD32 or kaspersky rules really. AVG is more of a prince ;)

AVG improves upon payment, the Exchange server version I use seems to have caught everything.

Kaspersky is very good indeed, if a little intrusive if you have all the bells and whistles in play.

When Agnitum release their Outpost Firewall for Vista, I will return to using that with AVG, in preference to Kaspersky.

I don't have enough knowledge to appreciate what impact switching to Linux would have. It appeals greatly as I'm appalled at the constant stream of half developed and over-hyped bug ridden garbage that Microsoft market.

Would things like Pegasus Opera run under Linux without glitches? Having spent many thousands of pounds on a windows based version I can't afford to ditch it.

Stop with Kaspersky - they have a far better detection rate (Never thought I would say that :blast )
