NOT A GOOD START TO GS OWNERSHIP

Well!!!

3 weeks into owning a 58 plate GS and it appears the clutch may be knackered, (not changing gear easily and creeping forward in 1st with the clutch in).

Worst case - upto £700 to replace worn clutch not covered by warranty
Best case - slave cylinder defective which is covered by warranty

22700 miles.... I think this is quite low mileage for the clutch to be worn, dont know if this is common or not.

had to take it to Cannons BMW Braintree but they cant do owt proper until the 15th ( today is the 2nd)

any thoughts, help out there????

I would say that that is a really nasty thing to happen. My GS has done 70,000 miles without a problem with the clutch. I'm forever expecting it to go, but will suck up the cost when it does so.

For an 08 model, I would be very dissapointed.

Hopefully it will just be covered by warranty!

That seems rather out of order for an 08 bike-especially a rugged roads GS. Woolastons have been very good to me in the past,rectifying problems without charge, out of warranty,as they knew they shouldn't have gone wrong. Good luck with it

If the clutch is not slipping when riding along it is unltly to need replacing. I would make sure that the lever is adjusted to its widest point and I would bleed/replace the fluid. JJH

If it is a 58 plate GS then the warranty will only be ended if it was registered 1st Sept 2008. As todays the 2nd Sept 2010 I can't see BMW refusing warranty.

If the clutch is just worn, then they will refuse warranty as it is a 'wear and tear' item, but for it to be worn it would have had to been some awful rider that had it before him.

Check the level of fluid in your reservoir.

As the clutch wears so the level will rise, if there's no head space left then the clutch will not fully engage.

If it's too high, a couple of teaspoons of fluid removed will return it to it's former glory.

I added the extra 1 year warranty on that started yesterday. the fluid level looked normal. The bloke I bought it off used it mostly for motorway stuff and seemed a level headed chap so cant see it being worn or misused. Just a case of waiting for them to look at it but god know when that'll happen as theyre well booked up.

Or his handguard slipped round and introduce a bit of clutch slip and attendant wear.

These are not the symptoms of a worn-out clutch but of dodgy hydraulics (may simply need bleeding).

But unless you get it fixed quickly, you will need a new clutch.

Hope your right mate, its gunna be looked at by them anyway. been looking in Haynes and the symptoms are very similar to what looks like a clutch release mechanism fault or cylinder leak.

use another BMW dealer who can do it quicker.

As Greg has said, that's not a clutch problem - that's a slave cylinder problem. So that'll be under warranty

If you`ve got the extra warranty call BMW emergency service ( 0800 777111 ) and they will recover your bike to a dealer of your choice for free !

those symptoms are for a clutch that isnt disengaging properly not a slipping/worn clutch so it will be hydraulics or release bearing. If the clutch is juddering on take-up then it could be a warped plate which could also cause it to drag.

Have a look at the clutch hose where it exits the slave cylinder on the gearbox.
Follow the hose to where it starts to go up the left side of the subframe. The hose should't sag between these 2 points but be in a horizontal plane.
There is currently a recall out to correct the sag as at altitude air bubbles can stay in the "sagged " bit of the hose and not exit through the master cylinder creating a similar problem of the clutch being not fully depressed.

Thanks for all the advice guys, in a nutshell theyve replaced the fluid and its cured the problem. Its been on test all day and I pick her up tomorrow. Just a small blip ...............i hope ................ £40 bill
