"This is not a GS, this is an S.... I don't like the way the GS handles this is much better. Much stiffer chassis"

I inspected further....yep, S frame, S telelever, S swing arm, GS wheels, seat, tank and ground clearance...holy sh#t!! Frankenstein lives!! Knobbies and all! So I'm thinking I gotta see this. Not only does he ride it on the dirt roads....he does the first hard section!! I see him again and he says:

"People say I'm crazy that I can't do the hard sections but I don't know, I think I just can do it..it's not that tough."

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

this is funny,,finding my self in england,,,
I guess I'm famous now..

my smugmug files are not working ,i don't know why hopefully soon they will be running again.

about the Bike, that I call "Golem"in honor to a old german legent about a monster made out of mud,,,very apropiate don't you think

Golem...

Golem: Hebrew for monster.

Or also for any figurative manifestation of the image of God, which according to the Jewish tradition should not be confused with the real thing...

So there is some reasoning behind the name...

let see I'm going for the 100 crashes a year record in the dirt,,I'm doing really well, i'm at about 65/70 and I have about 3 months left...

the bike is being in many single tracks naroow enogh to scare the little XR's,in fact at the "shettiron 300" from the 415 people suscribe only about a 150 took the difficult trails(they have easy ones that you can take).need less to say I'm a stuburn Sucker, and when my friends toll me.
"you can not do that" I was like.......Oh YEAH watch me!!!!!!!!!

zone one and two were very difficult hillclimps of about 1/4,1/5 ratio,,you know very step stuff but at least they were Wide,,well about 5'/6' feet wide.
lots of Jumps ,water bars, traction was Incredible, but the big GS require Speed to be able to climp this kind of things,,,man very scarry stuff.

well section III,,I was sure will be the same thing,,no big deal,,well it was not,,this one was far Beyond the capavilities of the bike and for sure my riding skills,,but you know what is nothing i can do,,i have a 100 guys comming begind me and no way to turn around ,plus the first part was a really step stair case kind of SINGLE track,,yeah like in Two bike can not ride it at the same time,,about 2 feet wide path,,sccarry!!!!!!!!one side full of trees and mountain, the other one a big hole ,river and more spiky trees,,If i fell the bike will be gone...
well i rode that zone for 22 milles, and was the hardest trail I ever try on my motorcycle,in fact will be scarry on a bicycle(and I race mountain bikes profesinally)
the conclussion will be,,those guys were right,,was way to much.

second day was easier but 150 long.

results: about 25/30 "crashes" in about 320 milles,,
the two footpegs gone, the shift and brake lever bend but usable, not by crashing but for trying to go to really narrow "trenches" the pegs end up breaking off,,lucky me I have some long 8MM bolts and I rode for a few milles on just them(unable to stand up my nutts hurt).
no broken bonnes,,left ancke a little wasted,,no big deal,,I atribute this to the best safety equipmenty,,you know knee braces"asterisk"dainese back protector and armor, motocross pant, good boots..you know the best the money can buy..

about the bike she survive exept I completlly destroy the clutch,,you see soon,,she have a ceramic clutch now,,some test results will come soon.

if you are impacient check here

if you are not i will post photos the minute the site is working

here are some photos many more to come

NOTE: I copy this from another posting,to not waste time.

here I'm before the carnage
212704-M.jpg

the first crash Down hill,,belive me,one of many
212687-M.jpg

the first crash Up hill,,I crash jumping a "water bar" at about 30 miiles per hour,,only way to keep the momentum on a really step hill,,I almost got to the top(i think I jump 15 of the 16 obstacles
212689-M.jpg

lunch on day one
212719-M.jpg

looks easy,,It was if you are on a xr 400,,, on the big PIG was really difficult, the tyres tend to fold into the holes and then the traction is minimal,,super Muddy!!!!!!

Is Incredible the Bike actually got me home(350 Milles away)

is a great advantage of narrow and step trails....

......is that the Bike never EVER really falls.

this is at the shettiron 300

can you see her under the tree !?!?!?
212684-M-3.jpg

view from the top,the rate of climb was about 3 to 1,,you know 3 foot forward for every foot you go up
212683-M-1.jpg

this I think was a JOKE,,the marking was totally wrong, the waterfall you see was just around the corner,in fact you can see it from every photo
212686-M-1.jpg

the place was beautyfull but i was by myself(I know i know,,stupid)but I was to scare of being stuck to stop and take a bath

Hey Ric.

Looks like you’ve been having a lot of fun on Golem! I would love to hear the details of the build of Golum i.e. why did you decide to use an R1100S? What condition was the bike in when you acquired it and what did you have to do to it to bring it into its current GS like state? I would also very much like to hear your opinion of how Golum compares with a normal GS. If you’ve got any pix of the build of the bike then that would be great.

Look forward to hearing from you.

lets see i was looking for a bunch of part to fix one of my GS's(she is to old and tyred) and a friend call me and ask me if I be interested on a r11S,,I tell him i was not ,,,,,and I did not have the money,so he explain me what happend...

the bike was a
stolen recovery and insurance company was selling it to him, but he did not want it,,,so I took his place and I got it...

I pay very little, about 15% of the bluebook, the bike was in perfect shape, very new (about 6000 milles) never crash,,no plastics, no lights, but she was running..

for a few minutes i give the idea of the "sport bike" a chance,,but I decide to attept a GS conversion,,I did have many parts,,GS forks(the S are to short plus the pivot point are on the "center bolt")a new front frame was necesary too,,basically I change the front frame ,fork legs and stantions, triple clamps, upper and lower, front shock ,a longer brake hose(the rest work fine)
the A-arm is the same,,i think that is it,,,the tank "kind" of fits(same GS mounts) but at the rear is very different and will need to be CUT if I want it to fit perfect,,so far I use the "Velcro" aproach to attach it and is doing just fine,,the seat got modified but was not a big deal.

on the next posting I tell you the whys and the Many Pros and cons....

Ric.

Cheers for the info sounds like a great bit of kit and a bike that you’re obviously not too scared about abusing! That’s how bikes should be IMHO. Did the GS front frame bolt straight onto the R1100S engine block then? I have always wondered whether the different models in the BM range use exactly the same block. I noticed that my 1150GS has what appears to be a frame mounting point right at the front of the engine – normally obscured by the bash plate. I guess this could be the mounting point for the R1100S frame then?

I think an 1100S to GS conversion project would be far too much for me to undertake but I know a mate (who’s probably reading this) who would be very interested in doing such a project if an S came up cheap enough.

I look forward to your next post on Pro’s and Con’s of Golem over a GS.

Good one.

the BASIC Engine casting is the same for all of them, but the S do have some dramatic differences.... the transmition is very different(gear much taller>>first Fault)all the other bikes use more or less the same sub frames,,or at least interchangable,, the front frame come in two different kinds(concepts),,basically the ones that have the "swivel" in the steering colum(like on the RS and the RT ...the S use a similar sistem)and the swivel on the fork legs(like on the R and the GS)

I like the bike for a few reasons,,
is a little lighter,,not by much,,is a lot more RIGID,,side to side AKA much responsive to power imputs,,I like it!!!!!!!
and the main reason that I like it is that is really easy to conect different sub frames depending on needs,,,that some day will be really important..

thinks I do NOT like,
the foot peg mounting sistem is connected to the frame and I'm always scare I'm going to break it or bend it,,,will be catastrofic if i break the frame, noy justthe foot peg mount,, the Gs is much better about that,,another issue is that the pegs are really tall and forward,,,so the riding possition is not perfect.

another think i do NOT like is that all the electronics are at the front of the bike,,next to the coller,,that is fine on the "sport bike" but very expose on a "dirt bike" and is just to many wires to just cut them and re-organize them

I tell you more later
