NOT A JOKE can i pop rivet my petrol tank

in a parallel universe far far away
going to start on the bmw project again and i like the look of old aircraft wings rivetted together and i would like to rivet the petrol tank ,now please remember this is me asking and in my world it seems like it would look great if it worked ,so seriously could you possibly drill a hole put a pop rivet and some sealer (petrol resistant of course) and then pop rivet.

i would like to get the effect of an aircraft wing .

You asked: Can I? Of course you can. You did not ask: Is it wise to do so? This would have been a more sensible question.

What a strange and wondeful place it is...

if you look at this slideshow from Devons classic weekend a couple of years ago you'll see a chinese outfit with rivets painted on. May be another option http://s242.photobucket.com/user/R_Farmer/slideshow/Classic weekend

thats nice but i want the rivets to be raised so it might be to rivet them onto a panel then put that onto the tank, but as allways my ideas and mind changes on a minute to minute basis your right it is a strange and wonderfull world i inhabit ,but sometimes scary .

You could also strain your vegetables through it.
 
How about

Getting a spare tank then riveting where you want them and then cut out the piece and somehow stick that over the tank you want to keep

Tell me it isnt possible and ill get my coat !
 
There are more than one type of pop rivet, and more than one material.
Some Aluminum shop front fabricators fix their door hinges with a heavy duty Stainless steel one which have a sealed end at the bottom, and they pull up good and tight too- they have to to hold the heavy doors.

You would still want to seal the tank internally afterwards , but most tanks will benefit from that anyway, and I think the sealed stainless type will have a better chance of success as they are presumably made for the job, and have less chance of corrosion.
 
The whole idea of drilling holes through a petrol tank is a real triumph of aesthetic vanity over common sense.

Just get it painted...... a good paint job can look very like the real thing.
cutting, rivetting, sealing testing for leaks, and then re-sealing will take time, and money......
and I didnt think you were spending lots on your airhead JD.

or....Paint, and rivet heads stuck on......
