Had my 2012 GS in for the 24k service earlier this week and, having avoided having a test ride so far, was given a 2014 GS TE as a loan bike for the day – bastards…

So, my questions

1. is it just me or are they so much smaller than their predecessors? Almost had to get off and check it had 1200 on the side just in case – there it was. How do you guys 6’+ manage? I’ve played around with mine to make it ‘fit’ – bar risers, lowered pegs, Sargent seat etc so I guess you do the same but I don’t recall mine feeling as small as these at the outset.

2. Does the stock screen work for you? I’ve fitted a Givi on mine so, certainly compared to the original, wind noise is a thing of the past. Great to be able to adjust the TE’s screen but at 6’1” & with a Neotec I could not reduce the noise – many of you changing screens?

3. How long is a German’s left thumb? I’ve fairly big hands but how do u reach the indicator without a big readjustment of your left hand grip each time? Practice I guess.

4. The big question – how the hell have any of you still got your licenses? Okay, I don’t exactly have a history of fast bikes – a 550 4 some 20 odd years ago, a brief period with an 1150 and now my GS but f@*k me this is a fast bike – Road mode was ridiculous but Dynamic is just plain stupid. Top speed (or close!) was expected but not the short time it takes to get there!!

5. Linked to the above – how do you tell how fast you are going? My sight is not too bad but can most of you read the numerals on the speedo?

6. Engine noise – what noise? A high speed tick and purrrrrrrr – what happened to the opposed twin thump and lateral pull? Guess this is why so many of you are putting on new cans?

7. Gear and break peddles – big feet and big boots – guess you get used to it but do u find you are having to angle your feet in considerably to make contact? Just me getting caught up with the side stand occasionally? Gears however were sooooo smooth (no problems going into N & only the occasional & satisfying ‘thunk’ into 1st) & fantastic brakes (when I could find the rear!).

8. For those of you coming from the TC (or older), would you swap back? No question, the LC’s a fantastic bike but, and here’s where I’ll get kicked out, is it a GS? I’ve no idea of the answer or if this is the right question but it just felt too similar to many of the more modern bikes I’ve test ridden – certainly nothing bad in that but just not, distinct?

Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed the day, a great bike to ride but ohhhh was I pleased to get back on my ‘old’ thumper and not have to be worried about being tempted away – enjoy your ride guys.

hell yeah on the (1) acceleration and (2) the indicator switch.

this is a fast bike and the noise/bark when she's going up the box is amazing.

All fair points. A largely agree with all of them.

1, I'm not sure it is smaller then the predicessor. Maybe the adaptions you have made to yours make the standard configuration seem small by comparison.

2, I done like the standard screen ether. I'm 6'1" my head is 2" into the wind blast. When I can find a second hand adventure screen I'll get one.

3, My thumb can't reach without adjusting. I miss the old three buttons. If I could retro fill the indicators from the old model I would. Blame the journalist riders for that.

4, Fast, oh yes. All the other bikes have got faster. Now the GS can keep with almost anyone.

5, Yep speedo is over complicated and hard to read.

6, I have an Akron, sorted..

7, You get used to it after a few days. All bikes are different.

8, No. I thought hard about wether to go HexHead or LC. The LC has just too many advantages over the old model. Power, tech, and style improvements. For me things like the slipper clutch and cruse control are killer features.

Is it perfect, no. No bike would ever be so for mass production. But it can be made so for the individual. Just pick up a Touratech catalogue and away you go.
 
5, Yep speedo is over complicated and hard to read.

Most questions answered as I would (though I'm very tall at 5' 8" :rolleyes:), but for the speedo I resorted to reconfiguring the digital display to show the speed in MPH. another gripe is there isn't an easy way to toggle between MPH & KMH.

My 2p worth on these two points - the stock screen on both the LC GS and GSA is rubbish, particularly when compared to the screen on the previous TC GSA which was excellent. I've just fitted an MRA X-creen Vario to the GSA but it's not much better; the Puig Vario seems to be getting good reviews; I think the problem is actually the screen bracket hardware - it's too flimsy and doesn't allow the screen to be adjusted upright enough.

And yes, like you, I find it tricky reaching across the scroll wheel to the indicators. I end up inadvertently changing the displayed screen on the Nav V most times when I reach for the indicator.
 
I have the TC as well and got a LC out last week when mine in for service.
My thoughts;
1, Switch gear in particular the new jap style indicators and cruise control are terrible. The thumb wheel just gets in the way.
2, Engine is good in road mode.
3, Brakes very good.
4, Not sure about styling, tank seems very high in front of seat.

Main thing for me is the switch gear. Hated it.
In general a good bike, but I will be keeping the TC for a while yet.
 
The reach to the indicator is just a bad example of parts-bin engineering. The blinker switch is situated just fine for bikes without the GPS prep package (the wheel is not there), but BMW in their infinite wisdom decided to use the same cluster with the gps wheel. There is plenty of space there to move the switch over further to the left and make it easier to reach, but that would have required an entirely separate cluster for GPS prep, which costs a bit more money to design and supply. So if you don't buy the Nav V to go with the prep (that came by default with the higher option packages), you end up twice as frustrated with this useless wheel and long reach to the indicator switch.
 
After my 100 mile test ride I'd pretty much agree with every point in the opening post, apart from the gear and brake pedals, which I found fine. Mine was a lowered one, which I accounted for smaller feel, but I completely agree with the comment about the engine feeling generic (fast though!)

For me it was combination of switchgear, fly by wire throttle and the engine feeling too smooth that made me glad to get back on my TC. For those exact reasons though lots of other people will love it!

I think you're probably right on that. Makes me so happy I paid extra for that privilege on the TE model. :blast
 
Anyone with an issue with the switches, you just need to ride the bike more, and get used to it. I have small hands, and much prefer the paddle indicators, but after over 15000 miles on LC GS's, have no issues with the new indicator, or the thumb wheel.:thumb After a while, you adapt.:rob To not buy a bike because of an indicator switch seems a little daft.
 
nutty : I had a 1400GTR at the same time as the water GS. The turn signals on the GTR were so easy when compared to the GS.

its a shame , really.

It's weird I hate the indicators on the WC but have no problem with them on the k1600 GTLE go figure :nenau and they appear to be from the same parts bin
 
1.Lighter, nimbler and better balanced than the previous tug boats

2.You must all have children sized hands or my thumb must be extra long ...or I am able to lift my palm off the bar slightly to reach the indicators :augie

3. I've learnt to use the throttle appropriately

4. Use the digital display - the analogue is too small

5. I've adapted to lifting my left foot off the peg, changing gear and placing my foot back on the peg...but then I've always ridden on the balls of my feet.

6. The only GS that has ever interested me, the only model to tempt me away from sports bikes
 
If the wheel is a problem buy the non prep sat wheel grip as i have done, i have small hands, i don't grip the bars, just use a lose feel and you'll find the switch gear perfect.
 
Excellent slant on the new GS thread.

My answers;

1. Size feels about the same for me, at a standstill. Feels smaller and lighter on the move.

2. At 5'7" the screen is just about perfect for me. I only use the highest setting on long motorway type runs.

3. Much longer than mine! Not impressed with wheelie thing.

4. I don't know :-) My friends say I'm riding much more aggressively on this than its predecessors. Wound it right up the other evening - what a glorious engine.

5. Speedo is crap. I have the speed displayed digitally on the LCD screen, a reasonable compromise but room for improvement there BMW.

6. I think the bike sounds great on the standard can, quite loud enough for me. And the intake roar when going for it is lovely...

7. Little feet, size 8, so no major problems for me there (but I did remove the rubber inserts from the foot rests to improve things)

8. Yup it's a GS. Afer 7000 miles in just over a year I found myself trying to cancel the indicators with my right thumb just the other day!

As others have said, it may not be perfect but it is bloody good. I'm loving it.
