I'm looking at a 29k 2004 1200GS, hopefully for sub 5K, and am working on the principle that if its made it this far it must be a good one. Plus bikes that are used more seem to last better.

Any good stories out there 'bout 2004 models, I've read a shed load of horror stories! :bounce1

If it's working and you like it buy it.... it's good fun taking the piss out of 1200 owners (especially those with humour by-pass where the 12 is concerned:D)
but compared to the amount they've sold not too many have had major failures.

I bought my '05 12GS in January this year & upon getting it home I looked through the service history & found the 1st owners address. I mailed him & awaited his reply.

A few days later he e-mailed me with a catalogue of horror stories concluding in, quote: That was the worst bag of shit* I have ever owned'. My heart sank that morning especially when I knew the 2nd owner only had it for 3 (three) months.

Well 10 months have past & it hasn't missed a beat. I've ridden it to Scotland & France and covered about 9k. As far as I'm concerned, forget it's history - I love it.

I'll never forget how sick I felt those 1st few weeks but there was no need.

Funny thing imagination! :mmmm

I've got an 04 bike, covered 34,000 miles only ever had 2 problems both of them corrosion on front engine plate.:thumb

I had a March '04 bike, so one of the first off the production line. Had its fair share of problems, but I think that it was fairly sorted by the end, except the residual problems that they all have. There's certainly a logic that its done 29k in less than 4yrs, which is at least twice normal mileage for a bike of its age, so it can't be that bad.

When the '04 bikes are running they're spot on :)

I have an 04 with 30K. It's a great bike which I intend to keep for a good while longer yet :D BUT..... It's currently in the shop for a new final drive and fuel sender unit. :tears. Don't let this put you off though, as they need a good bit of milage to run in, and if it is running well now there is no reason to believe it won't keep on doing. I can live with the occasional mechanical "blip" as long as there aren't too many of them! :thumb

:augieI've gone for it, its a one owner bike so lets see how it goes, and thanks for the advice.
:beerjug:

I have a march 04 bike :rob

I am the second owner, overall in very good mechanical condition.

No real problems, just suffering with quite bad corrosion (including internal corrosion!) (there goes my chance of selling on here!)

It has had its minor glitches, however, I do live my owning time in fear of that big expence of a major failure. I have read far to many horror stories. Just trying to enjoy the bike for what it has to offer.

...bought my '04 plate 12GS in March, just under 23k on the clock, one owner, seemed in great condition apart from some corrosion on the engine plate. Have put 5k on it myself since then, and it's been fab. Only issues to date are I had to replace the rear brake disc 2 weeks ago which had warped slightly having worn thin (previous owner I think must have trailed his foot on the brake a lot!) - can't be sure, but I think was probably on its way out when I bought it as it was always running a bit hot. With the new disc, though it still runs warmer than the front, which I'd expect, it's nowhere near as hot as the previous disc. Guess that's what you call experience now. Only other prob to date is, sod's law being what it is, now the weather's turned colder, my right heated grip died on me on Monday last week. But apart from that, I love my GS which has been totally trouble free - and I ride it most days as I use it for commuting as well as for fun. So they're not all bad...

I blame the internet,:augie thats why there are so many sad,bad problems:jibber
Anyway,my bike is a 05,I am the 2nd owner,it had just over 13k on the clock,it now has just on 15k,I got the bike the back end of sept.this year,it ride/sounds like a good'un,this is my first ever bmw,and it's the first bike of many that I have had, that I have had to top it up with oil,but thats just a BM thing, in't it:nenau, or so they say.
Now I have a m8 who a few weeks ago got himself one'a those K1200gt? well in less than 800 miles there was a very, very big bang, and the gear box/engine just fell apart.
It's just down to luck maybe:nenau
