I'm currently touring on my old 1150GS ..(123,000 miles)
Appeared to have plenty of oil a couple of days ago. Now in Briancon, and a mm or so under full on sidestand, Can't see anything on centre stand (cooled)
Nowhere open tomorrow for oil ...
Safe to ride for tomorrow or not ?

I think there is a thread on this somewhere. Measuring it might be inaccurate. I don't have a centre stand, so when I look on the side stand I get a false reading. When I used to have a centre stand sometimes it 'd be full, other times missing or vey low. Next day it wa normal. I couldn't figure it out either

Have filling stations stopped selling half litres of oil ? Halfords?? Google Maps is your friend

Did you let it sit on the centre stand or side stand directly after the ride ?

You could have 1/2 a litre + up in the oil cooler

Riding to get oil?? Go easy on it Don;t thrash the ballix out of it !! :rob

When you get to the Oil Shop? If the bike is up to temperature (3 or 5 bars) Leave it on the side stand for 5 mins to let the oil cooler rad drain down to the sump

The larger French supermarkets will usually have a selection of oils.
Worth the search for peace of mind even if, as mentioned, the level often seems to have a mind of its own.
For consistency I always check on the main stand.

Thanks guys.
I'll have another scout around tomorrow. To be fair I reckon she's only used about the half litre in about 2700 miles. In pretty hot weather up and down the Cols, so reckon she ain't done so bad, for the miles on it. I just forgot to bring a bottle ...
if I have to mix grades then so be it. I only ever ride her gentle nowadays anyway....

there are 2 large supermarkets allegedly open on a Sunday according to Google maps, Casino & E.Leclerc. There's a Total Access fuel station opposite McDonalds and an Esso with KTM shop on the N94 Rue de Gap.

It's a 1150 - you can use any oil, including car oil as it has a dry clutch like a car

Sorted thanks guys. Seems that 20/50 is pretty rare out here (couldn't find any anywhere, so she's had a half litre of 10/40 which has taken it back just over 3/4 on the sight glass, so happy with that

Good stuff. I lost all my oil from Hexhead once, busted filter. Biker buddy despatched to look for oil at 18:30 in Italy and came back with 4L of unknown oil in a non original container.

I’d love to know what it was ‘cos the bike never ran better with it!

You had to add half a litre……. So it still had three and a half litres in the engine :D ….

But if you can't see it in the sight glass, how do you know ....
I'm pretty happy with half a litre or so over 3000 miles up and down Cold loaded with camping gear
