Stay insured: new penalties for motor vehicles without insurance The new vehicle insurance law means that the registered keeper of a vehicle must keep it insured unless they've made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). If you're not insured and haven't made a SORN, you could face a penalty. Find out what the change in the law means for you.

Stay insuredIf you're the registered keeper of a vehicle, it must be insured at all times.

The exceptions are:

•if you have made a SORN for the vehicle
•if your vehicle has been kept off-road since before SORN came into force on 31 January 1998 – unless it was brought back into use
•if your vehicle is recorded as stolen, passed or sold to the motor trade or between registered keepers
•if your vehicle is recorded scrapped or permanently exported by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing (DVLA)
What will happen if your vehicle doesn't have insurance
From the end of June 2011 Insurance Advisory Letters (IAL) will be issued by the Motor Insurers' Bureau to the registered keepers of uninsured vehicles. This will be following a check of the Motor Insurance Database (MID) - the UK's central record of vehicle insurance. The IAL will advise the registered keeper that their vehicle appears to have no insurance and what actions to take to avoid receiving a fixed penalty from DVLA.

If a vehicle does not have insurance, the registered keeper could:

•receive a fixed penalty of £100
•have their vehicle wheel-clamped, impounded, or destroyed
•face a court prosecution, with a possible maximum fine of £1000
Payment of a penalty does not replace the need for motor insurance.
How to avoid a penalty
The details of all insured vehicles should be on the MID. You can check that your motor insurance details are on the database and are correct by following the link below.

Sigh

Been in place a long time, and been discussed at length here at least twice.

You'll be fine without, mind earlier in Look North I saw that all roads into Sunderland were closed for the past 8 hours due to a "Suspicious vechicle". Apparently the Police said it had did tax and insurance

Feck off. Don't believe you.

In his defence, the guy was from Wales, said he was in bed with his wife this morning, when she asked him to take her in both holes. He told reporters he took her to Sunderland first and was on his way to Coatbridge when he was stopped

sigh

Well done rce for taking time out from trainspotting to point out that disgraceful error in BSOGRI'S late posting that information.
I call upon the moderators to cut his braces and take the pea out of his whistle as punishment.
I for my part will give him a hard stare.....harumph.

No worries, even managed to miss a few numbers while giving your post the attention it deserved ;)

TIP : DONT follow the advice above.

If you do put your bike/car details into the MID database and its NOT insured I can promise you that it will generate a SORN fine almost immediately. You have been warned .

its still a tax sorn,
if you have no insurance, you must send the tax back, therefore you need to sorn,,,,,
an uninsured vehicle must not be taxed anymore,

If you know your vehicle is not insured why would you check MID.

DO check MID to see if your vehicle is shown as insured and the details are correct.
I've had issues with multi bike policies were the main bike only was shown as insured, also with SWMBO's Suzuki car which MID showed as a Rover.
Umpteen emails between MID & Insurers & over 4 weeks to resolve.

I wasn't using the bike at the time and was in fact about to put it up for sale and had being going through all the paperwork in preparation but couldn't seem to find a valid insurance certificate. Concerned I put the details in MID to check = no insurance.......The insurance had in fact expired, my previous insurer had always automatically renewed but the new insurer didn't :blast........4 days later a fine arrived in post.
