My guess is a faulty relay contact. If you have a piece of heavy enough gauged wire, you could briefly link across the relay socket secondary contacts and see if she spins up, purely for diagnosis of course and not as a remedy.

Under the seat is a box below the toolkit. In there you find a starterrelay sitting in a terminal. . . .check all wires going into it from below.
I had the same problem on my 2004 a while back and found one of the wires corroded and broken. . . .after I replaced the connector my bike was just fine...........the cause of the heavy corrosion was the little drain hole of the plastic box was jammed with shit and the water was sitting in there. . . .I mounted a mud sling later and check the hole sometimes to make sure it stays open. . . . .hope it helps
After you checked all the wires you can measure the voltage on the cable to the starter . . It should be 12 v when you press the starter button. And the little click in the relay is what it should do . You just can't hear it normally because of the noise the starter motor makes......

8) the non existing fuse
9) the side stand switch
10) the starter switch
11) the headlamp
BUT:
a corroded cable running from the relay to the starter. the previous owner must have done some diy job soldering the cable. it than corroded over the years and when i stripped the cable it just fell apart....
Luckily easy to get to location so not a big deal in the end once i had found the little bastard,
