What are peoples thoughts on if a bolt breaks on a bike while its in for a service????

For me it would depend on the bike and the circumstances, a thread stripped by a heavy handed spanner monkey i'd expect him to put it right if it were on a reasonably fresh bike but perhaps not if it were an old well used bike. Alot depends on your relationship with the engineer/shop i suppose, if i snapped a bolt in someone elses bike i'd do my best to put it right unless it was obvious the fastener showed signs of previous abuse.
Sump plugs are a bugger, strip one of those and the bill could be significant yet it might be that the thread was only held in place by luck alone, in that circumstance i'd contact the customer and ask what they wanted to do but i'd not accept liability unless i had been a right clumsy twit

We get it from time to time, as does any garage who works on older cars.
One of our bugbears are the waterpump bolts on 300/200TDi engines.....they can (and do) snap off, which is an engine out job to sort if the normal first attempts to get them out after that don't work.
Fuel injectors also snap off, close to (or even inside) the heads.
What we tend to do is call the customer if one's being a right bugger to come out, and advise them that they're being stubborn (or even explain this to them as we get the job in)
Sometimes though, it will happen, unexpectedly and even with the best of care and procedures carried out.....we have a Disco in at the moment that we changed the fuel connector/distributer block on......it's below the manifold and it's a bit of a pig to get to, but when the pressure switch in the old ones goes, it pisses diesel out like you wouldn't believe (common rail high pressure system)
So the new one went in last week....we powered it up and the new one was pissing out from the steel crush gasket area.......at some point, someone had done some work on the manifold and there was a tiny lip of welding swarf that had caused the new one to not sit 100% flat.
So the manifold has had to come out to give us access to the area.....making an hour's job into a 5 hour job all told
It happens all too commonly unfortunately, especially with older vehicles
I think you mean while undoing something and I know that there are certain bolts that are prone to shearing ie exhaust studs. But so do you and as the xpert I would expect you to act accordingly. On an old bike one must expect that things will brake snap warp strip whatever and you cannot ask someone to pay for incintidal unintsional damage. Unless you are paying a main dealer €100 an hour. You might find they won't tutch anything old or ok they do there will be get out clauses. JJH
If it's a good customer, and it's one bolt, then we would probably waive the extra cost, otherwise it is charged for, special replacement bolts would always be charged for, even if it's done gratis, then it's still itemised on the bill as the work done, time and charged at zero, it stops tight arses from trying to reduce the bill!

Seriously, if you worked on my bike and a bolt snapped while you were removing it I'd expect to have to pay
for it. This has been the case where a mechanic in Cork stripped a cylinder head bolt while reassembling and
I paid for the Helicoil and his time.
The fact that he drilled the feckin hole crooked and then bent the bolt so it wouldn't line up with the hole in the
cylinder is however still something that pisses me off a number of years later.
Based on what Civil has said and what Jay has said I think Jay might have possibly overreacted, most rants
are, and I think Civil is in the wrong given the circumstances.

Is the switch still in one piece I.e. has it simply stopped working?
If so then Farkoff owes you fuck all. It would have happened anyway.

Thats why I posted the question "did you break the switch or not". To which as yet there has been no answer. This would only lead one to think that indeed he did break the switch.
Come clean Jay !!!! Tell the truth now.
