From a couple of years ago but I wonder what opinions this will nurture.
Wife phones me one day at close of the day saying car won't start at the office - I was working away and so advised to call our local garage that have done a few services for her(she likes the stamp in the book!)
Mech comes out, tows the car back to his garage and drops the wife home.
He checks it next day and informs me over the phone that the alternator is guffed, £170 ish for exchange fitted. Given the go-ahead he swaps it out, charges the battery and drops the car home,
Two days later, I'm back home and wife goes to car in morning and battery flat again - won't start.
I jump it from my car and check volts across the battery - zilch! new alternator must be guffed mk2, not wishing to believe this I check further and discover the output of the alternator is a healthy 14.4v, following the circuit back up, I find a 125A main fuse blown on top of the battery, £2.70 bespoke part from Seat.
I went back to the garage and said it had been the fuse, they were a bit casual about it so I asked if they had returned the original alternator yet, they hadn't so I asked if I could take it and swap it back.
Up to you was the response!
I swapped it back and sure enough all was good! I took the new alternator back (cleaned it too!) in the box it came in.
I asked for the cost of the alternator back but did not ask for the labour element.
Relations felt a little strained for a couple of months after (all good now) which I felt was a little unjust-maybe they were a bit embarrassed
So I would appreciate opinion from both sides of the fence, mech and punter alike:
Was I :
a/Unfair or unreasonable
or
b/treated shodily
or
c/ something else?
BTW No opinions expressed on here will affect my decent relationship with the garage - they make a good cup of tea!
I do think that if wife had reported the car broken again, they would have fixed it (finding the fuse as the culprit) but I suspect they would not have swapped back the alternator nor refunded the cost of it.
