B. Mechanic obviously jumped to conclusions without troubleshooting properly or methodically first.
I find it hard to credit that a mechanic would fit a new altinator and not check for charging at battery. JJH

I agree with you JJH, but the fact remains that the fuse was found to be blown after the repair and replacing the fuse and the original alternator sorted it and it performed flawlessly til we sold the car around3-4 years later. I rate one of the guys very highly, meticulous in his work, I guess the repair was done by the other of the pair

The mech had had the battery out for recharging and access to the engine bay, I guess he put it back in and the charge light went out on dash, on that basis I guess he thought the job was aok!

I left the tools end of the motor trade in1984 but I remember when fitting a dimamino or altinator I would always check for output more to see that it was not over charging and frying the battery. I once seen a battery blow up. Not nice. JJH

you wanted oil, as well?

My father in law used to work as a storesman for a large car dealer in Belfast.
The dealer started to compete for servicing business by offering cheap deals.
Multi bay servicing stations supervised by a couple of mechanics with yellow pack youngsters doing the grunt work.
To the father-in-law's knowledge at least 2 cars were recovered after being serviced and returned to their owners without any engine oil.

About 12 years ago, my car started to die after a major service. Not their problem said the service manager, not their problem said the foreman mechanic until he took it for a test drive and then admitted that something wasn't right.
Into the workshop with all the expensive test gear that they needed for the franchise, but that they couldn't use as they had been trained.
Various heads peered into the engine bay, all time wasting until a young lad arrived into work. He had a look, took off the vacuum take off pipe and filter to the ECU, and removed the ECU. He then emptied oil from the pipe and from the ECU and explained to the assembled group that this would happen if the filter was incorrectly mounted. He left the ECU to drain, then reassemble everything, showed me how the filter should be correctly installed and went off to solve all the other problems that the other "mechanics" had.
No apology from the dealer, no recompense, no more business from me and from anyone that I knew.

My out of town Skoda dealer has been exemplary, and gets great repeat business and new business because of their high service quality.

Experience has proved to me that the the small concern values your business, that the larger the business the less likely you are to receive a competent service as they put throughput before care.

I've met both parties and I value Jays experience with all things mechanical.

Any work I've had done on my motorcycles by Jay has been very thorough and fairly priced.

To get a feel for the way Civil conducts himself, people should I feel revisit THIS thread and post#38 in particular.

And maybe my 'bad attitude' is a direct reflection of my experiences over the years.

I was thinking about this last night & this morning & I can think of 5 seperate occasions where various garages have tried to rip me off over the years.

3 different cars, 2 different bikes 3 different cities.

2 tried to rip me off to the tune of £500 each

1 by £250

1 by £80

1 by £1,500.

So on reflection I asked myself the question again. Am I being paranoid? Maybe. But with very good reason.

As for the Balderstones comment I think you'll find that that is an indication that I'm, prepared to concede that if I've had a bad experience but others convince me it was a one off, or I'm being petty I'm prepared to give anyone a second chance.

As for how I interact with them? Well forgive me for reacting badly when they're trying to fleece me, rather than shaking them warmly by the hand & giving them repeat business. But then I am odd like that.

Probably fair to say we've had different experiences over the years, I'm delighted that you've had the sort of service we should all get. Who knows, when I start using Rainbow perhaps thay'll change my opinion.

Some garages are rip-offs, some are not.

1. Father-in-law 1100 morris: you need new hydro-elastic suspension units. The old boy paid about 1000 pounds. I looked under the bonnet to find the same units had been just refilled with oil. He was too 'nice' to complain so it was left.
2. Motor cycle shop owner and friend, has a nice mercedes. Went in for a service and he got the call, needs discs and pads. Oh no it don't says owner and refused to have the work done. His motorcycle mechanic took photos of perfectly good brakes and presented them to the head of the Merc dealership. Embarrassment all round.

3. I changed brake slave cylinders on GF's car before MOT (day before). Got call from Quik-Fit to say brakes had leaky cylinder??? I queried and visited car on ramp. In my opinion, they had squirted a bit of fluid behind the seal before I arrived to complain. Nothing wrong with them!

4. Work mate (female) takes car to Quik-fit for MOT and is told needs wheel bearings. Taken for 2nd opinion.....Nothing wrong with them.

If you find a good one. Stick with them, but it takes time to build trust. These are just 4 examples within my own experience.
PS dont trust Quik-fit Northampton

Read this thread from start to finish, kept looking in, just, quite simply, can't believe it :rob

We reap what we sow .....

That's what I thought fella ..... I stopped paying attention to the subject matter several pages ago :thumb

We all did, thought this was now about the motor trade in general and trying to wind up the Irish :aidan

Truth be told it's only still going because we've heard someone is running a book on it so want to made sure everyone has had a chance to get their bets down :beerjug:
