OK so I have now got my SPIII now and what an amazing piece of kit?? I have studied all the manuals and now have a fair understanding as to how it works.
All the software is installed on the PC, but I am a little unsure about a couple of points: -
1) In my ignorance I assumed that I could load all of the UK (at street level) onto one 128mb Data card? To be fair it has loaded 32 Mapsource maps up as far North as Carlisle, total memory required was 132mb but it all loaded on the 128mb card. In all honesty this will be suffice for my requirements, but according to the Adventure- Motorcycling promotion CD you can load it all onto one card?

2) The other area that I am not to sure about, I have had a play around with the Mapsource loaded on the PC and have constructed a couple of routes ready to download on to the unit for a forthcoming trip in May.
So do I load this via the PC interface cable and store that data directly on the SPIII or is it stored on the data card? Has the SPIII got RAM, if so how much?
If it hasn’t got RAM and the routes need to be saved on the data card, this obviously means that I need to remove some of the maps in order to free up some memory so that I can save them?
Would it therefore be worth while getting another data card so that additional info can be stored when touring or is it not that simple?

Cheers in advance

BTBR

PS
I used it today for the first time (sad I know but for company business, although its my own) while I was out visiting two suppliers which are based on either side of Birmingham. It directed me to both companies, deadly accurate I have to say!! How the hell did I manage without it?

BTBR - what version of Mapsource City Navigator do you have? I only ask because it may be that V6.0 maps are bigger (contain more detail) than previous versions. I can get almost all the UK on a 128Mb chip using V5.00 - I used to be able to get the whole UK on V4.0, IIRC...

I have version 5 and can near as dammit get all the UK on it, a friend just got one with v6 on and he can only get England and Wales.

partial answer.

Maps go on the data card. Routes, tracks and waypoints go into the internal GPSR memory. I really don't know how much memory it has but there are limitations on the number of waypoints, routes, etc. See the specs for those.

Mike,

I have vesion V6.0, so I guess its because it has a lot more detail than version V5.0 does. Loading them on was a bit of a juggling act as to what maps I could load as to what I might need.

I could have all the UK on if did'nt load the four maps that cover Central London, the down side was that one of those maps went up as far as Luton?
As I say in the end I loaded all the maps up to and level with Carlisle, East to West.

So if the pre-planned routes drawn via your PC are downloaded and stored directly into the unit rather than the data card, what is the memory capability of it then?

Hi BTBR
Glad you're up and running - you won't regret it - its a truly amazing bit of kit - remember reading a soggy map inside the map case on the tank bag?!!!

The SPC III has the capacity to hold 500 waypoints and 50 routes, BUT if the routes consist of 1200 waypoints (in total) then it will truncate (shorten) the last route loaded.
I run V5.4 maps and don't have a problem with the data card but I've just helped a pal load V6 on his new SPC III and we found that leaving off the 4 central London maps enabled the rest of the country to be loaded.
The size of the tile (map) in Mb varies quite a lot dependant on detail i.e. Central London is big in Mb but a small tile whereas the Highlands are small in Mb but the tile is big - thats why we ride to Scotland every year for a play and not London!!

Have fun with your new gadget - I still find mine amazing after 12 months of use
Sherps;)
