I'm going to rip the engine down for a quick check and fettle.

Are there any common modifications for a bit more pep? Big bore kit perhaps maybe a cam even?

I'm not wanting a rip snorting fragile beast just a little bit more than i've got.

I'm sure just a revalve and new timing chain will help.

I'm not a stranger to tuned engines:blast, hence the requirement for just a little more rather than needing a tarmac scorcher

How deep is the wallet / need for more power?

If you need and can afford it then this has to be good:

http://www.biker247.com/news/1169.asp

Just need to factor in a new exhaust to get the best out of it :augie

Then, how good are the brakes :comfort

Yes, i looked at that but it dosn't really stop there if you start to take that path, i would guess the crank would need a rebalance, the heads would need a bit of work to allow it to breath a bit better and to balance the combustion chambers, new Carbs and pipes:blast You MAY end up with a stonker of an engine but at what cost? I can see £2500 - £3000 disapearing by the time all thats done properly!

And my pocket won't stand that.

I was thinking about the motobins big bore kit £5-600 should give a reliable extra few ponies:nenau Especially if the bores/pistons are a little tired and needed changing

Won't that be a Siebenrock ordinary kit? Might be worthwhile compression testing the engine to see what needs doing. Any ideas on how old the valves / valve guides are?

The engine's done 65-70,000 miles and as far as I can tell is untouched apart from servicing.

The valves/guides are certainly going to be changed, and I suspect the timing chain is a little tired, the only reason to strip the rest is cos I can really, it uses no oil at all and there are no big rattles, despite me holding it flat out (ish 95mph) for a tankfull just to see what might break.

You can look at stages of, £, ££, £££, ££££

As you are going to have the heads off - Twin plugs and gas flow must good value per £

As does Siebenrock if you had the 800cc engine, but not sure about the "Big Bore" kit

Dare I mention collector box!:augie:D

As I have just been told on another thread "off topic"

But I am a little nearer the "clear out" - and you will be the first to know - if depends what i do with the "red bike in the shed"

Is your Bike now "in bits"?

It's my thread i'll take it where I want:D

In bits? Oh yes, very much so, lots of things to do on it now, the frame always needed a paint up and on stripping I've found a few other little issues (all in another thread)

Colour Scheme
As HPN seems to be being discussed quite a lot these days, have you thought about one of their colour schemes - frame one colour, sub frame another - although I have always liked BMW Paint Code 318 - santorinblau - the Basic colour - If it were me I would follow one of the HPN colours
(If you do want a 318 sample, I believe BMW still sell small paint rattle cans - I bought one a couple of years ago)

Siebenrock 1000cc kit :thumb2 plus ( as you say ) valves/guides/timing chain. Carbs may need a service kit but that is about it:) I wouldn't bother changing cam etc etc.

Basically these bikes are best as standard:thumb2

FFS !!!!:blast
Leave it alone, just rebuild it as it should be, 800cc is best running engine of the light flywheel lot
900cc is best Heavy flywheel engine...............
You want to soup; it up get a Yakegaawahondazukikkawacati and feck about with that !!
Airheads are airheads
You want a fast one? get one someone else has had done and buy it off them cheap cos' it's not standard :rob

P.S. Twin plugging, imho is a waste of fecking time..
Better by far to do a dyna coil conversion...

The 800 is too much of a slug in the paralever frame.

1000cc barrels and heads, 9.5:1 pistons and the early RS airbox should get it moving nicely without going away from standard BMW parts.

I have a spare pair of 1000cc heads and I know where there's a pair of barrels with 9.5:1 pistons.

I have a spare 1000cc bevel box as well.

That makes sense !!:thumb2
lot better than pissing about with non standard bits !!!:rob

Or

If you want to keep it as an 800 then fit 9.5:1 pistons and a pair of Dellortos (got a pair of those with 32mm adapters sitting in the garage) :augie

I've got to agree with Proff on the 90 heavy flywheel motor

twin plugging is great.

I had mine done while the very clever mechanic had it apart for a rebuild anyway.

he only charged me an extra $300 aus $ for the plug work and coil(same plug top and bottom.)

best thing......power smoothness and fuel economy
