O/S maps in mapsource??/ getting Oregon onto big screen?

Has anyone had any success in loading O/S type maps onto mapsource?

I've just been playing with my garmin oregon 550, and it appears to have a routing function- essentially you select a point, which the unit stores and "joins the dots" as you go along- i figure just put a point at each major change of trail direction or junction. seems quite simples.

Now it does this using the O/S maps on the oregons's little screen, which makes putting a route together quiet easy, but it would be even simpler if i could do all this on the laptop and then put it onto the oregon, or just use the oregon through the pc so i can have more detail up- to help work out where i want to go next.
Which if you've tried using a standard gps isn't quite so easy when you can't see the detail on a reduced scale map with a small field of view.

Has anyone else found a solution for this??

I use a Windows 7 Laptop running Mapsource and have a 550.

I use this site CLICK HERE to get any maps i need from Open Street onto the laptop and then via transfer into the Zumo.

You are offered several ways of getting the data from the site - so whether you want to assemble your own maps or use the way they send them to you - there are lots of options...

mapsource can not use the os maps for some reason but if you use garmin basecamp then you can route on your puter and transfer to the garmin

O/S- ordnance survey i'm afraid, but thanks for the feedback so far, looks like i have plenty to keep me out of trouble this afternoon.....

OS maps don't work in Mapsource, you need Memory-map, which are electronic OS maps - they look exactly the same as the paper OS maps - I use 1:50k.

Using Memory-Map you can draw a route and then export it direct to the Oregon. In the Oregon use whereto>route and select the route in on-road mode and it routes you there, then switch to off road mode on the trail (or it tries to route you to all the waypoints via the road. You can export the Memory-Map authored routes as gpx files and import them into basecamp or mapsource and view them don't get the map detail.

Memory-map is raster mapping - the routes you draw are an overlay. You can't route using Memory-map like you can in Mapsource. But you can auto route in Mapsource/Basecamp and download to the Oregon (road routes only).

The Oregon can read dual layer raster/vector maps, which means (if you have e.g. the GB Discoverer maps) you can look at what looks like an OS map on the screen but it's layered over a City Navigator-type vector map, which means you can find addresses and POI's and route the same as any of the normal road orientated Garmin's. If you switch to Automotive routing the map looks like any Garmin road map.

For the Oregon, you need Basecamp anyway, as you can use this to see the data directly on the Oregon. Basecamp is a free download for Mac or Windows.

Update - Memorymap isn't needed

With the latest version of Basecamp, if you have the Garmin GB discoverer maps installed these will load into Basecamp from the Oregon - and you can view and plot routes on screen on the OS maps in Basecamp directly and then download to the Oregon. Massive improvement!

The Oregon only appears to use OS maps for route calculation. Actually there is a City Navigator-type map underneath which the unit uses for route calculations.
