Got an issue with a 2005 R1200GS after a final drive service where l sheared off a brake calliper bolt which then allowed air into the brake system  , and now have a soft rear brake, no pump whine and a warning light. First experience with an ABS bike and it all seems an arse ache, ABS was working fine before it needed bleeding.
Should l now dump the ABS system (free) and save some trouble in the future or buy a simple OBD unit like OBDlink LX or Unicarscan UCSI - 2100 (£50-90) and use the MotoScan app to purge the ABS pump and bleed out the system, Any opinions or info would be appreciated.

(Coffee & bacon butty/pasty if there's a local lender of a simple OBD unit??)

2005 bikes had the servo/abs… the servo system needs bleeding. Which lives under the fuel tank, has its own front and rear brake fluid reservoirs and six bleed nipples, which must be bled in the correct order, and the calipers are bled last. Don’t worry, it sounds more complicated than it actually is, especially as you can use the servo motor to pump the brake fluid.

You don't need an OBD unit to bleed the brakes, as said above you do need to bleed from multiple points on the servo unit under the tank, and top up the reservoirs there as well as the ones at the levers. However, if you get filthy fluid out of the calipers, you know that the system hasn't been flushed recently, and it is then a ticking time bomb.

Cheers for the info but still having issues getting ABS to purge, so went and got a OBD LX unit and Pro version of Motoscan app so l can purge ABS pump as its doing nothing now on the rear brake...but Can't get the frikin thing to connect and sure l'm doing something wrong somewhere as l'm getting two red 'no compatibility' faults coming up in Motoscan under 'k-line and can bus' whatever the F that means?
Tried the LX unit in my car using LX software but not connecting to the car either (duff unit?)

Plug the LX in with the ignition off, the canbus will power it

Connect the phone to the LX first by Bluetooth

Then open the app and do a connection test

Then turn the ignition on

There’s a good video here…..

Cheers for the info leadfarmer, Still no luck waiting to hear back from the seller as unit seems stuck in some sort of software loop maybe? LX unit has done a firmware update and says its running latest one but in the updates page is showing as 'Firmware version 0.0.0.' but in app information is showing version 5.38.0.
If l can't hit it with a hammer its beyond me....

Quick update a was a faulty unit so had a new one sent through, just to make sure connected to my car first, no issues fast connection and worked as it should...but...had issues with connecting it to the bike via bluetooth for some reason, just about to give up and it connected. So happy days, now just need to spend more money on the app to complete the ABS work.
Wish I'd saved my money and torn the frikin thing out. ;)

the ONLY place u should be looking for firmware for one of these is

Well l give up, bought the Ultimate version as didn't know pro wouldn't work, LX working fine but still not getting purge function, then l get a email from Motoscan stating, "On your bike is an old FTE ABS module installed. This module don't the ABS purging function" FFS...
Checked mine and its a X0645

I'm done with all this unnecessary crap, ripping it all out.
(Cheers for bearing with me)

Just for info, that some people that have de-abs'd their bikes have trouble with their insurance. The insurance companies don't like the brake systems being down graded as far as they're concerned. Of course you could forget to inform them when you renew but that then opens another can of worms if you ever need to claim.

Just to be Clear The ABS on your bike?

Is it the later car type system (No whine when levers pulled? (Albeit it just two channel) can be repaired and you do get full power brakes if the unit fails

... If it is the Servo Assisted type (2005 unless very late in the year it should be)?? In that case DUMP IT!!!

Re move and re-pipe as standard to be honest I would buy the proper parts rather than making do It looks standard at MOT and there are usually no questions

Part 3 and Part 1 Making it all Plug and play

Pull the servo system out

Remove the Electronics box off the unit and RETAIN IT Seal it up and refit it to the loom and secure it from bouncing about

Dump the Electro mechanical section Here it looks like the pictures are still up LINKY
