There a few weeks ago recommend this b+b 10mins walk from Mein Gate.Driveway parking safe enough I'm sure, 30,50,70euros FOR 1,2,3 immaculate Rooms, cracking breakfast, easy to find, helpfull lady, maps and discount vouchers for museums etc.

Jona, we have stayed at Varlet Farm many times and can highly reccomend it.

It is only about 3-4 miles out of Ypres centre. The host, Charlotte is really nice and will happily give advise on the local area and history. They even have a small on site WW1 museum which is very interesting. Secure, covered parking for the bikes, and a great choice of beers in the fridge If visiting Ypres, you absolutely must visit the Menen Gate for the Last Post, it's a really moving experience.

I'm 99% sure this is where I stayed a couple of nights the year before last. She is a lovely lady running a small, very clean B&B a short walk from the gate. She really enjoys showing you her photos etc of Ypres.

All accommodation is booked now .... Could anyone give me some ideas of main points of interest?

1 day Ypres
1 day Somme area
3 days Normandy

So far planning (Ypres) Tyne Cot ... Flanders museum ... Menin gate 8pm ... German cemetery

(Somme) No idea yet

(Normandy) Still in planning

Only 4 weeks to go... it'll be a rough plan on the ferry over inbetween a few sociable ones

Hi Jona with only one day for the Somme I would suggest start at the main memorial at Thiepval. In the visitor centre, which is free entry, there is plenty of info via maps and film shows. After that you can choose wherever you want to go from the info you picked up there. Have a gudun

You could have a search of the cwgc website for a anyone sharing your surname and use the locations given as aiming points. Can be quite interesting.

I popped over a couple of days ago and stopped off at a cemetary and turns out a 'Whitford' was buried there, so have now got his details and shall see if he is related or not.

Jona, if your are looking for places to visit in Normandy, I would recommend at least half a day at the Merville Battery and another at Pegasus Bridge (Benouville) and you must have at least one coffee in the Cafe Gondree, then following the D514 along the coast, a visit to the remains of the Mulberry harbour at Arromanche, then on to the gun batteries at Longues-sur-Mer and Pointe-du-Hoc which are both well signed off the D514. If you have time, a trip further up the coast to Sainte Mere Eglise and the gun battery at Azerville. To be honest, there is so much to see all along the coast 5 days probably isn't enough. On the way back, the US Military cemetery at Colleville is an awe inspiring place to see. The are also a number of small private museums along the road which are worth having a look at. Basically, just stick to the coast roads and you can't go wrong! Have a great trip, Dave.

Ronnie, sorry I missed your call mate. Was good to meet up!
We have booked into a place in the Somme that is listed further up this thread, it belongs to Martin and Kate Peglar and comes highly recommended
I'll let you know how we got on in a few weeks after we return
3 of us going now so should be good fun.

Just booked 8 days breakdown cover for £24 with vehicle rescue direct
Does anyone know of any good companies that will do a one trip motorcycle travel insurance?
I have travel insurance with my bank account but apparantly I am only covered riding bikes up to 125cc

Why is nothing ever straight forward when it concerns bikers????

it covers re pat to the uk also covers helmets/leathers/pannier contents.
worth giving them a try 0800 280 0742.
also be sure to take your e u health card formally known as e111 i think.
dont forget all of your other docs ie v5c/mot ect

p.s ... Sorted my spark plugs now mate, what a bitch of a job!! had to take the airbox off and had torrets for an hour! whoever designed that needs a good kicking
