02 1150GS running sweetly, 23 miles into a 25 mile commute, stop at newsagent for a paper. come out and restart bike, Batery light stays on, rev it a bit light still stays on. First thought is belt has bust. Turn ignition off then on restart bike and the light goes out.

Is this just one of those things or is it a sign of impending doom. :nenau

Just one of those things? But I would check my earth connections:augie

I posted this reply earlier today but it disappeared after the site had been down for quite a long time. Not sure what happened there....?

Anyway, I'll try again. I think there are a couple of thin wires going to the alternator that feed the exciter circuits and I seem to remember reading somewhere that they can rub through their insulation and short to earth. If this happens then the light stays on and the alternator doesn't charge. I may have mis-remembered this, though. Even if I did, checking the insulation on all the wires going to the alternator isn't a bad idea anyway.
