OK before I start the process of contacting Garmin support (I've been through this before to get a replacement 2610 earlier this year), I was hoping someone could let me have some "insider" info ;)

When I switch on the 2610, at the bottom of the "StreetPilot 2610" splash screen (before the warning screen comes up) a black box appears with "Holding" in white. The 2610 does not then go onto the warning screen. After a little while, 30 secs?, I can press "Page" to get to the warning screen. Now this only happened this monring, and when I was playing with it in the car park - I did not then leave it long enough to see if it aquired sats.

I'll check to see if it then gets Sats later today - but any help in the mean time would be appricated.

I can't see anything in the manual about it.

UPDATE

OK

1) The "Holding" is actually in yellow not white - doh.
2) the Page button did not work this time to get out of the splash screen regardless of how long I waited.
3) I Reset by switching on with Page & Menu pressed - no difference.
4) after 30 mins of driving, switched it back on (no holding message) it worked but none of the buttons worked - touch screen OK. So I drove with just the map page showing.
5) switched off/on again, no holding message and then everyting worked including the buttons.

So it now appears to be OK - but I have no trust / faith in the device. If it continues to work for the next few weeks, I'm sure I'll put it down as "one of those things" - but today I'm feeling dubious.

BTW I updated to 4.90 the other week.

cheers

UPDATE 2

Going home last night had the holding message again, and none of the buttons worked regardless of how many times I switched it off / on.

OK where's that Garmin number.....

:( :( :(

UPDATE 3

Striaght through on the telephone (I know!!), and it's being sent back. Did the normal reset to no avail. He couldn't tell me why it was doing it other than it's not repairable remotely.

So just posting this last update for reference if you come across this "Holding" message in the future.

As been mentioned many times beofre, when you speak to them, they are VERY helpful.

cheers

I reckon you've found an undocumented feature; there are screen displays which can be accessed by pressing various button combinations which assist with fault analysis. Check with Garmin.

UPDATE 4

Good News:

Received a replacement 2610 new unit today at ~10:00 which considering I sent it off last Thursday is pretty damn impressive service! I guess they took one look at it and thought "send him one of the new ones we've got in stock and are trying to shift"!!!! Very Pleased!

The not so good news:

This is the 2nd replacement 2610 I've had in the last 10 months or so (a recent GPS convert) and I'm beginning to wonder of the 2610 is that reliable a unit. Any thoughts? The first problem was an instable touch screen, this was something completely different.

Anyway, off to spend 2 hours loading up in 2GB CF card ;)

cheers

 I had just made up my mind to splash out on a 2610 as the price nudges £39.99 (inc bike mount, postage and vat) in the post Christmas SALE

Will it now be a waste of money ???

I'd have to say "No, it won't be a waste of money". I love the 2610, it's just that I've had to send it back twice. I know that seems a contradiction in terms, but when it works it's "so" good, sending it back has not put me off. It's just I was wondering if I've just been unlucky, or if it's a common issue.

Oh, and when 20kms west of "the middle of nowhere" in France and two desparate english bikers turn up begging to be told where the nearest petrol station is, a few button presses, and you're their hero (along with a bar of choccie which is all they had - and forced me to take!).

Also at the prices now, if you only get 2 yeasr use out iof it, it will still be money well spent.

cheers
