Just returned from A long run today,

put the bike on the side stand and upacked and generally pottered about for 3 - 4 hrs

noticed the front spots weren't working so hooked up the laptop to have a look at the Hexezcan ,

only thing it said was no canbus signal ( there wouldn't be because the engine wasn't running )

So i pressed the starter, the bike turned over and then stopped with an an almighty bang & clang from the LH side

it sounded like piston meet valve

anyway started it again to see if it was terminal, and it started and ran fine, no odd noises

Never had this from LC before, or is it a similar thing to the hexhead if you leave it for a long period of time leant to the side?

Are you sure it was from the left hand side? If it was the starter retracting back from the fly wheel they can make a heck of a racket.

I always leave mine on the side stand (2013 LC) when camping and never had any issues or odd noises from this.

Noise

Mine did the same thing. A couple of times actually. Sounded horrendous but no idea what caused it and doesn’t seem to have caused any harm. Time will tell.

I’d be interested to know what it is as it’s clearly not an isolated incident.

There’s a centrifugal decompressor on the end of the cam shafts that can make a reasonable clack as the engine stops

Always wondered what that noise was.:thumb2 although never heard anything as extreme as the OP is describing.

My 1250 does it occasionally when started from cold then stopped again before its warmed up. When re-started it sounds like it is spitting back through the airbox and stalls with an almighty 'clack' - sounds as though there is hydraulic lock or something equally nasty. I mentioned it to my dealer and he confirmed that it does happen sometimes (and sounds horrid), it depends where the engine has stopped in its cycle just before re-starting apparently. They all do that sir :D
