I took the 1150RS up across the border today. A brilliant trip, motorway to Carlisle (I took a gander at the 1300GSA while I was passing Lloyds Motorrad), A7, Newcastleton, Hermitage Castle, saw an eagle close up and the views were stunning. St Mary’s Loch, Moffat for fuel and home to Kendal.
The bike fired up fine from cold with no battery charger connected for a week and at every stop until Moffat. After fuelling it struggled to turn over and when it did fire the clock had reset.
I got it home and it fires up straightaway.
Maybe the starter motor is starting to fail? I’ll check all the leads are tight. Any ideas?

If the bike was warm when you had the problem, my money would be on the starter motor shorting out somewhere inside causing a massive current drain.

My money is on the starter motor…

Magnets come loose resulting in a change in the magnetic field and it’ll struggle to turn over.

Cheers

Thank you all. I’m thinking starter motor too given the symptoms but as the battery is 11 years old (I checked the previous owners service record) it’s going to be wise to replace it as well.
Expensive then 😏
